Good movie, but honestly..

In a bass battle, how could the guy with the Ric not win? The spirit of Lemmy would fly out of the Ric and kick the other guy's butt.

For those that haven't seen - here's the link:

I'm guessing not enough people have seen this so... I just added the youtube link. C'mon talkbassers - where else do you get a bass battle for crying out loud.

...I've heard that Rick's have a tendency towards weakness near the headstock/neck joint and the neck heel joint, similar to Gibson's infamous weak headstock joint - so wouldn't a weapon prone to cracking under shock make for a poor melee weapon?

EDIT:
Nevermind, they aren't actually fighting... I need to get out more.

Those solos are weak, though.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Just a reflection of real life, where Ricks also look cool and seem to do the job, but fail you when it counts...

I think that I read that the mustang track was recorded with a ric, and coincidentally, the ric track recorded with a mustang. It's all in the sound.

Justin Meldal-Johnsen played the evil bass player. You can read about it in this thread: Scott Pilgrim Bass Battle!

...I knew there were reasons I didn't want to see that movie. I guess I'll add "wasted potential of a bass fight" to that list.

That and crappy hipster dialogue and bad jokes

That movie was not a hipster movie. It portrayed hipsters in a quite unflattering light. It was a beautiful marriage of geeky nerdiness and geeky musicianness.

The plot flaw was actually the part where there wasn't a 6-string bassist competing (and inevitably winning).

Scott's supposed to lose. That was the point. He and his band were made to be intentionally crappy lol.

As it turns out, it's Myth confirmed. No wonder the Ric lost, it actually won! Lol

Hmmm.. So does this settle the eternal question what kind of bass is best for Meldal?

So what you're saying is that I can win a "funky" bass battle by picking a bunch of clanky, overdriven eighth notes?
