SHAFTED(by my school)

Sign in to disble this ad
They f****ing screwed me over!
It happened like this...
I signed up for this "Musical Friday" thing at my school. When I signed up the dude told me that I needed to do a rehersal before I could play. Ok, cool. The tuesday before the thing was supposed to be practice. So I hauled my 30 pound amp and my 9-10 pound bass to school and the guy couldn't stay after school. Ok, cool. He told me to bring my stuff again on thursday. Ok, cool. I took my stuff home and thursday rolls around and I end up leaving my stuff at home. As I'm pulling in to the school I see the AV guy setting up. So during the break period, the other coordinator comes up to me and says "ummm, it turns out the the thing is today but the junior band isn't ready. So, either you can play today or you can play next month. But I still have to ask the juniors when they want to play and I'll get back to you." Ok, cool. I told her that I didn't have my stuff so I would play the next one. Then she tells me that she still has to ask the juniors. Ok, Cool... Friday comes and no word but the juniors end up playing. Fully prepared to play the same set for the fifth time(All The Small Things, Stacy's Mom and Use Somebody). But nobdy could tell me. So I find the coordinators and I ask them what happened and they say that that was the last "Musical Friday" of the year. No sorry, no nothing. OK, COOL! So two weeks ago was the last friday before finals. Those lunchbox peer ministers and StuCo orginizers turn out to be liars. A friend of mine who played drums for the juniors(and hated it) ended up playing that friday. Again nobody f***ing tells me, the bass player(the only real one) about it. OK, F***ING COOL! I had been trying to do the Musical Friday since the second week and the once chance I get was taken from me. Ok, cool. Next semester they're gonna learn not to f***ing f**k me over. I'm gonna play Rage Against the Machine for the whole lunch period....
And the seniors will NOT be playing f***ing Stacy's Mom!

I got suspended on the day my first real band was supposed to play at school, snuck out of the office, played & was promptly expelled. DOWN IN FLAMES, BABY. Unfortunately it's all been downhill from there... the heroin, the human trafficking- maybe it's better that you didn't play.

You are complaining about dragging a 30 lb amp & 10 lb bass around? LOL!! Wait until you start gigging and have to carry a 85 lb tube head & 2 15's, 2 basses and the complete PA including mic's & stands every time you play.

& I am a 54 yo geezer.

I almost did a school gig, the backup band for the school's yearly sketch comedy show. The band was completely organized and run by two or three students in the band, all that I had known for a while, and I knew the vast majority of the other musicians.

Long (so long) story short, they take forever to make a decision on bass players, leading to me and the other guy showing up for a rehearsal, while I was the only bassist for the past two to three rehearsals. He was three years younger but had more experience with the music and was a proficient sight-reader, while I was not, and he was the school's jazz band bassist. I politely stepped down.

It's best to stay away.

If I had a nickel for every time you said "Ok, cool" I'd be rich. Seriously though, just quit complaining. Everyone has, or will get shafted during their lifetime in some way, shape, or form. Just take it like a man.

You'd have 40 cents. You can't even get something at McDonald's for that.

As for you, Mr. OP, life's a bitch, and then you die.

I reread that whole post 3 times (whew). Could you please highlight the part where he said that? I can not seem to find it.

Aye karumba. They are shafting you far worse by not teaching you to express yourself in English.

Exactly what I was thinking... rather than worrying about playing in a school band, maybe you should pay attention during English class a bit more...

3 good things would come from that..

a) People reading your posts on the 'net will be able to understand you.

b) You'll most likely get a better job.

c) It'll make you a better song writer.

If you write as you speak, I would advise easing off the processed sugars and the caffeine. Also you do have to make yourself (and your gear) pretty much available at their leisure if they're organising a show. Odds are they were more focused on peaking an interest in music and creating a fun atmosphere for those students involved as opposed to chasing up potential members, especially if this was just a after-school activity.

If you're really into the whole idea of school performances, try and get involved with the stage musicals in future. The bands tend to be more close-knit and the person in charge more focused on creating a good show, which tends to be more fulfilling for everyone.

Really, now that I think about it, my only problem is that the juniors(now seniors) the were getting preference play the SAME 3 song set every time!
And everybody gets tired of hearing (in this order) Stacy's Mom, All The Small Things and Use Somebody, no matter how much they like the songs.

To OP, you think that's bad, pfft.....wiat till you and your whole band show up to a gig an hour from home, get told it was canceled and we'll book you next month- call you on Monday.
No call no nothing.

Now, I understand that in the little bubble of your world it's a big deal for you. And in high school- your world is a bubble. Thats just the way it rolls.
I get that.
Don't worry, it only gets worse out in the real gigging world. So enjoy!

(and you thought playing in a band was fun!)
