She offered us $420 cash to play Freebird!

Last weekend a gal comes up to the band and fans out $420 cash, waving it back and forth in front of us, requesting that we play Freebird.

And we turned it down! LOL!!

Thank you! Not sure if there are any, but for sure not many, songs more detestable than that one. Well, excluding everything from Rush, anyway.

Why?
Didn't you know it or what?

For $420 + the gig money I would do 3 45 min sets of it.
And I don't like the song.

Really? The only reason I can think of is that y'all didn't know it!

[Goes to youtube to watch and learn song] You'll never catch me turning that down! Y'all gotta remember, y'all are in 'cover' bands! All artist integrity gets thrown out the window. You play what ya gotta play! For a $420 tip, I'm playin' that, Mustang Sally, Brick House, Sweet Home Alabama and whatever else sad songs all y'all hate! I'm gonna go ahead and say........y'all crazy!

Yeah, really! Well, except anything by Jack Casady, Jean Millington, Bill Wyman, Chas Chandler...

why on earth would do that?
freebird is old news. no cover band wants to play it. i get it.
but you are getting paid to entertain, right? I assume 420 bucks was a substantial boost to the take for the night- so why not take it?
Were you making some kind of stand on your principles? That's an expensive stand to take.
Did you think that maybe she needed to keep the money? Did it seem irresponsible to take it from her? Was she too drunk to know what she was doing?

I used to work at a bar and i was wearing a star wars t-shirt one night. i had a woman offer me 115 dollars for it. I sold it right there and finished the night in my undershirt.

I nixed a band mate's suggestion that we add Freebird to the set list but I would definitely do it as a one off for cash.

I'm such a whore!

I'm sure this list could be added to many times ending up having almost every musician from the last sixty years on it. Truth is, these two bands just annoy the hell out of ME, I'm reasonably sure other people have different opinions of these two bands, and they have as much validity as MY opinion.

But I personally would turn down a couple of hundred bucks to play anything by either of them.

OPOMV!

You wear an undershirt under your t-shirt? Here in the North Woods we consider a t-shirt to be an undershirt, sometimes plain and sometimes with writing and/or pictures on it. We wear t-shirts under our flannel shirts. If we get too warm, we take off the flannel shirts and run around in our t-shirts, some of which say things and/or have pictures. Ain't no more shirts under our t-shirts.

I really don't understand the enmity towards this song, and it's completely mindboggling that you would turn down that kind of money unless you just don't know it or your guitarist(s) can't play it. We've added it to our setlist and play it every damn show to massive success. We are "the band that plays Freebird and kills it" and we are ok with that. Turning down $100/man for TEN MINUTES of "work" out of some righteous indignation and then coming here like you're proud of yourself or whatever disgusts me, frankly.

My take on this story is that the gal was uglier than heck, she was wasted, and she was trying to pass a wad of Monopoly money for 420 legit dead presidents but Biggbass' bandmates didn't fall for it!

Or, these are men of integrity, and they've taken a solemn oath to never, ever, play that song...

I would've played it for a full set, just like the album. Whistles and all. Cash in hand first, of course.
(There was a time in my life before I got tired of the song...so it'd be just like reminiscing )
