I am going to let you guys email me if you disagree... but I still won't care.
If you want to sing for a band... buy your own gear. That means a good pa, mixer, and mics. Guitar side has about $3000 worth of gear. Bass side has about $2000 worth of gear. Drummer has about $2200 worth of gear. You want to sing for the band and you expect the band to provide a pa for you to sing on. I am sorry but it doesn't work that way. You guys need to have your ducks in a row before you post in here. You might have the best voice in the world, but if you don't have the gear, you are just wasting the bands time. And if you think the bands revolve around you just remember what they call a guy with four musicians... A singer.

In both of my current projects the singers own a PA!

In a past project not only did the diva not have one but left our PA cabs in her car and they got stolen, never saw a dime from her ... only an "I'm sorry" guess who had to pay for the replacement speaker cabs?

... Never again!

Only downside of the singer owning the PA is if they are diva jerks. Having the singer "invested" though makes a lot of sense.

That's why I still have a full PA, lights and mics etc:

... That way you can pull the plug on one as needed!!!

A jerk is a jerk, with or without a PA.

If a singer (good, bad, or otherwise) happens to own a PA or a substantial amount of gear, that should improve their marketability when they search for bands. To me, that just seems like a smart move that ups their odds of landing a good gig.

As far as I'm concerned, seeing a prospective singer that owns gear tells me that they're more likely to be a pro & a team player than somebody who walks in with nothing but their own "awesome talent". There's a big difference between a bona fide Singer & some karaoke king.

We call guitarists, Guitards. and drummers, Dumbers. Is there a vocalist pet name? How about singer/ sound guy?

Luckily for me my current band doesn't have an individual dedicated to only singing. Both of our guitarists do vocals, and the Rythm guitarist owns the PA in addition to the rest of his guitar gear.

The drummer owns the Drum Mics and lighting equipment.

I own the cable that goes from my line out to the mixer...

In college we called the vocal majors "Canaries" Not insulting enough though...

+1.

The other day our singer was boasting the rock boots she bought were so awesome she bought 2 pairs! £150 each... -_- (lucky they do look pretty darn good on her :P)

And then I said "Wait, I'm carrying £1,000 worth of equipment on my back right now, and you haven't even bought a £70 mic yet, and you just told us you spent £300 on rock boots?"

Her reply was "Yeah... Opps, there's my bus. Gotta run!"

One day...

i guess a good singer is harder to replace than a mic..........the singers have a lot of clout in band pecking orders and i doubt that it will ever change....some will keep egos in check some won't.....some will be team players some will be divo/diva types.........every band has to work out for themselves some kind of group dynamic they can live with.......in the art world it is the same ego that drives performers to excellence that often becomes such a huge pita later on.....

I actually came to playing bass from being a vocalist (looks like im doing vocals again as of yesterday, still gonna keep learning bass though). I had no gear when I started, but I was asked to come try out and have since made every attempt to acquire my own PA and equipment. I currently have everything but a decent mixer...mine is beat up and has 3 bad channels out of 8.

It would seem that this is the status quo though...since the guys from my last band had to borrow my PA to audition singers for their new project.
