How do you get rid of that smokey smell your equipment gets after playing some places? For me the best remedy is some sunshine time, right now all my stuff is in the driveway getting a sunbath. Which is usually OK but sometimes it rains and this weekend is the neighborhood garage sale and I keep getting lookers wanting to but my stuff.
Just wondering if anyone has a better solution. |

If I remember, a bunch of people recommended putting your bass or other gear into a really big plastic bag with one of those ionic-filter fan-thingies (technical term). Anybody else remember that thread?

At the gig, all cases, bags, and other stuff immediately goes back into the car after setting up, to keep it as clean as possible. When I get home, the basses get uncased and wiped down... Straps get hung out on the deck, (if it's gonna be clear)... Amps stay in the garage for a day or so. Like yourself, if it is sunny, all my stuff gets a tan

Just got it a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't so sweet smelling. I had some armor-all cleaner (not the protectant) that is usually for dashboards and interiors, and it worked great. It got rid of about 95% of the smell that had probably been there for years. I wouldn't do this every week, though, so sitting it outside to air out would be the best idea to me. |

I use those travel handi wipe things for my bass (painted fender so no direct wood contact). It also cleans the strings and costs $1.79

The stink would give my wife an instant headache. I had a Toyota Pickup truck w/ shell, and that's where my stuff stayed for several years. Only my basses came in the house. Good thing it was a safe neighborhood.

Nothing better than walking into a club for a gig and not smelling any cigarette smoke.
Barring that, UV usually is the best way to "clean" it so baking in the sun is a good idea. Otherwise..."Febreze"?

Vinegar removes odor *beautifully*. I've gotten rotten milk smell out of car upholstery with it, its that good. I use it on pet odors in the carpet, too. Doesn't stain or fade the rug.

The Vaudeville Mews - No smoking.
The House of Bricks - Smoking allowed.
Everything else (sound, crowd, environment, stage size, etc.) aside, I actually prefer to play at the HOB. I would rather smell smoke than stale beer. Smoke does linger a lot worse than the nasty beer smell, but for the time that I'm in the venue, the beer smell makes me feel like vomiting. I hate the smell of beer.
In reference to the question, though, I can't really help you too much. My cabinets have the textured paint finish rather than carpet, so they rarely absorb much for smells, and I keep my case closed when I don't need it to be open. |

But, they are not enforcing it. People are still smoking in bars. It's not much of a law if there is no way to enforce it. |
