I've gotten that many times, especially on flights.

Most call it a guitar, which I don't mind because I usually say that as well (so I don't have to spend hours explaining the difference).

Back in the late 70's I did a gig where it was an all ages open event and I was
playing an all natural finish Gibson Ripper L9-S at the time. After we got done with
our set a very elderly lady came up to me and wanted to know about the " tree branch
thing" I was playing that made the " oomfa" sound. I explained to her that was an
electric bass guitar as she was genuinely fascinated by it. I still can't get where she
came up with the "oomfa" sound as we were no polka or country band. I've had many
a good laugh over my playing a "tree branch thing".

Haha, that's awesome! I play the oboe as well (and bass, obviously), and I can say with utter confidence that it will never be mistaken for a bass. Of course, I would probably have said that the other way around before reading this thread, so who knows?

Reminds me of the first time I helped set out a drumkit. This kit was a flats kit, which consist of little more than a rim and are only a couple of inches thick. One of the soundguys, not the regular, was convinced he'd seen me walk around with a frisbee.

I've also had my bass mistaken for a gun before now, and someone thought I was playing the banjo at one point..........WTH?????

Speaking of having instruments mistaken for guns, I play in an early music group (recorders, sackbutts, cornetts, etc..) with this really nice guy... There aren't many cases for contrabass recorders and tenor crummhorns, so you have to improvise. Anyways, we played some gigs at elementary schools. You should have seen the chaos when my friend walked in with a bunch of shotgun cases...

"I like to play a game whenever people guess the wrong instrument or obviously have no idea what it is and don't want to admit it by venturing a guess. This game is called "How much deeper can their confusion go?" The rules are simple: Throw out as many different instrument names in one conversation as humanly possible, and NEVER admit it's actually a bass.

The game is over when someone else enters the conversation and finally spills the beans. A true master of the game will leave the other party so thoroughly confused they will actually continue to question whether or not it's a bass even after they're told it is."

Best game ever lmao

That girl is so ignorant that it's a wonder she knows how to get dressed in the AM.
