For sounding to "black " .Ive worked for years to try and be a good funk groove player who can play around the pocket and create rhytmic tension. The guitard (who is very talented) is a pop punk grunge freak and wanted no element of groove ,just straight 8ths . When i would play straight 8ths and push to try and make it rock he would freak out and stop the song ,tell me i was playing off time .then porceed to tell me it sounded to stale when i played it straight on the beat . I do well in the sub market have alot of call backs from people so its not like i really needed the gig ( although the female singer is extremely talented). It just kind of took me by surprise . I knew it was gonna be a chore to work with the guy when i heard him say "no that guitarist just thinks hes good ,you never hear someone who is really good say it abou tthemselves ,I mean I never say that " .... irony at its base level .....

The guitar player was not that good or talented if he unable to explain what he wanted from you in musical terms, not a bunch of vague nonsense. It sucks but better things will come.

Tell him sorry you thought he wanted you to go for more of an orange sound and you'll try to get it right next time.

The guitarist sounds like a real piece of work. Like KeithPas said, if the guitarist can't explain what he wants then he's really not that good. Also, if you play what he wants but then he doesn't like it then why would he fire you for "not" playing like he wants? Makes no sense to me. You're better off playing with some real musicians that respect you and your talent. You're from Austin and I'm sure there's no shortage of good bands to play in.

Isn't that the ****** part about being a bassist sometimes. I guitarist can shred for days and almost everyone will love him, but if we show some creativeness, we either get a raised eyebrow or people think it's too much. Bleh.

yeah. I know plenty of guitarists like this. No matter what the song is just play straight 8ths for hours and do it "right". As I'm playing all this boring stuff all they do is take 10 minute solos.

Sorry to hear your guitarist ate a full load of Moose Sh*t! But they are known to do that and then their brain explodes... guitarists, can't live with them, can't kill them.... legally, that is.

I'd bet if we got a dollar for the collective number of times we have been fired from a band, this forum could pay off the national debt (pre-Obama and Bush, that is).

if i recall there was a couple of little grunge bands with groovin' bass players,
anyone heard of
STP..
Alice in Chains..
Nirvana..

They all seemed to have some nice grooves going on..
maybe he's confused about what grunge sounds like. =]

yah, if there is any tension or apprehension or just plain ......we all dont get it as a band,

then it is time to leave

that is why they call it playin' in a band.....cuz it shouldnt be work to get along, every one should basically work together....

time to leave

My guitar player likes it when I "play out" and take a more lead roll with the bass. He says it forces him to play better.

Too bad it doesn't make him sing better.

Well why not play punk fills and give it that feel instead of trying to groove and play funk in a pop punk/garage band?
Maybe learn to adapt to different styles better?
Unless it was only the guitarist with that pop punk attitude, and not the rest of the band.

What's sounding black anyway? Sounding like James Jamerson? Vic Wooten? Randy Jackson? How would that be bad?

They might like creativity a little better than creativeness, but to each his own I guess.
