You will thank me one day.
I know I'm thankful it was required when I was in college as a music major, really helps you to visualize how everything fits together, and lets you take ideas and work them out so you can hear how EVERYTHING fits together.

It will help you in all areas of music. I should have stuck with it.

Seriously though, another choice could be the upright bass. You might be able to get some more work (MIGHT, depending on the available gigs, sound & image of available gigs), but upright is a good solid choice for a ssecond instrument.

My guitarist plays theremin, he's had it for 4 years and says he wasnt proficient until about a year ago, but being a guitard he now thinks he's the "go to" guy for all things theremin, he put up a blog on his myspace 2 days ago called FAQ's and its all a bunch of snobbery, like this one:
Q: Where did you get your theremin?
A: I'm not at liberty to say, or outerspace.

I was a little bummed because we'll lose the theremin in our band, but I just heard from a guy who plays a Moog Synth of some sort, an MS2000, Octopads (ok, I dont even know what those are, but they sound rad) and his laptop. I dont want to jump the gun, but Im hoping this guy will be a good fit (and he sounded super enthused about jamming with us!).

Yeah, I play a little bass too. I could tell what you were doing there. You were playing some major and minor scales. I was watching your hands.

piano is VERY beneficiary as well though, as it combines prettymuch everything a music theory teacher has ever taught you |
