Keyboards/piano.

You will thank me one day.

I know I'm thankful it was required when I was in college as a music major, really helps you to visualize how everything fits together, and lets you take ideas and work them out so you can hear how EVERYTHING fits together.

Piano.

It will help you in all areas of music. I should have stuck with it.

Piano for theory, drums for rhythm. I think all bassists should jam on a kit every once in a while and get some feel for groove, but I'm not sure you NEED college lessons for it.

The theremin.

Seriously though, another choice could be the upright bass. You might be able to get some more work (MIGHT, depending on the available gigs, sound & image of available gigs), but upright is a good solid choice for a ssecond instrument.

A theremin would be awesome, however there probably arent many people adept enough to qualify as a theremin teacher.

My guitarist plays theremin, he's had it for 4 years and says he wasnt proficient until about a year ago, but being a guitard he now thinks he's the "go to" guy for all things theremin, he put up a blog on his myspace 2 days ago called FAQ's and its all a bunch of snobbery, like this one:

Q: Where did you get your theremin?
A: I'm not at liberty to say, or outerspace.

I'm super excited right now (sorry to go OT on your thread OP), but we're making a move to get rid of said guitar player/thereminist mentioned above. I was a little bummed because we'll lose the theremin in our band, but I just heard from a guy who plays a Moog Synth of some sort, an MS2000, Octopads (ok, I dont even know what those are, but they sound rad) and his laptop. I dont want to jump the gun, but Im hoping this guy will be a good fit (and he sounded super enthused about jamming with us!).

Am I the only one going for electric triangle?

Yeah, I play a little bass too. I could tell what you were doing there. You were playing some major and minor scales. I was watching your hands.

my votes on the sax. it seems to be a natural double for bassists
piano is VERY beneficiary as well though, as it combines prettymuch everything a music theory teacher has ever taught you
