I say study the piano, and the drums! Rock your bass at home. All are instruments that stimulate your rythmic skills. Don't forget you're the melodic half of a rythm section. The piano is seriously THE best way to better your musical skills in general: theory, rythm, composition and not least finger coordination. Didn't Cliff Burton also study piano?
