Stage sickness

Anybody familiar with a situation where you're up on stage and your band bursts into a fast paced song and you're stomach burst out a fast paced projectile straigth at the crowd?

Well I am, and God is it terrible. We were playing an hour long set at this shoddy rock club and I felt fine for the first half-hour or so but then we launched into our faster half and seeing as I also sing (lead), my stomach couldn't handle the nervous overdrive I was in. During a bridge I felt my lunch come up to my throat and instead of singing the last chorus I let it all out at the crowd. I should of released it somewhere on stage but I was scared of covering my bass.

But the band didn't stop, oh no they finished the song and the guitarist goes into an unplanned cover of sublime's new realisation - punk-rock way, the crowd goes crazy and as we finish that one I feel the urge to erupt once more. I unplug and run to the restroom. Strangely I had people congratulating me on the 'great' gig while I was washing off my shirt along with 7/8 other people.

Oh my Dog!

I always get the s#!ts before a gig (Imodium is my friend), but I have never barfed on the audience!

That is soooo punk rawk!

The bassist for the gore-grind band Exhumaned does it for fun and i think G.G Allin did that too. ROCK ON!

I thought this thread was gonna be a simple case of "stage fright", but hurling is not simple. when I started playing bass in front of people I made up my mind that "I don't care if I make a mistake, I don't care if the band heard it, I'll just try not to do it again, later".

MAJOR FACT: especially at a bar or beer party....NO BODY KNOWS WHEN YOU SCREW UP, unless you screw up consitantly. they are not really listening to you specifically anyway!

If I were you the only time you have a right to be nervous is in the studio...time is money and mistakes cost money and the tension builds.

RElax, learn to enjoy the songs and PRACTICE so you won't screw up! thats why I practice.

Funny,I noticed when a guitarist messed up on a solo,and a bassist forget his notes...

But you're right...if it's a crowd of non-instrument players then they cant really tell the difference,unless it's either a well-known cover,or like a solo...

They were probably encouraging you to not let that moment get you down and plague you for the rest of your performing days.

If i get stage fright, i just take a few deep breaths, and act calm. Because if you act calm, then you will eventually feel calm. If im somewhere no one caj see me (ie back stage in a change room) i literally shake the nerves outta me. But hey thats me.

Dont let this hurdel get in yourt way and drag you down though man.

I've never really experienced stage fright. My first gig was at a music store. We were standing at the stairs that lead up to the stage. Earlier that day we did sound checks and made sure everything was working. We all had our instruments with us. My adrenaline was pumping like crazy. When they announced our band name we went up on stage. I took a deep breath. Then we played. The crowd stoop up and clapped for us. I think it's called a standing ovation. But when we got off the stage I felt like I wanted to do it again. It was the most fun thing I've ever experienced in my entire life.

i member one time before a gig, i had to take a big crap and i did - it was the only toilet in the place and i overflowed it it!

talk about stink-fest

I'll respond to the last two posts.

Unfortunately they don't let us drink beer in church. saturday night might be nice, but we're trying to impress the kids! beer does that right?

and I have to poop sometime when I get real nervous. Dustin Hoffman (actor) admitted on johnny carson that he got diareha every time before he performed on stage.

it's really mind over matter...if I let myself get all wigged out,my body will go whack...but,If I control it,dont eat...and put the excitement "button" on,then I think I'd be good to go. For my first show...I am gonna be littlery shaking while playing probably

I get nervouse at gigs, and get really really shaky. But when I get one stage, I stop shaking, but my hands tense up and cramp easily, and I sweat like a pig. It's not fun, but not as bad as barfing on stage.

Playing oldies or church music, I have never been nervous.

For some reason, when my originals band plays, I am always very nervous. I wish I knew how to get over it.

Barfing ON stage? To me it all happens within the 10 minutes before a set starts! Wether its adrenalin, over-concentration or just weird stomach...

I'd say it also depends on the situation. Who's watching the performance? Your ex, the president or just som drunk teenagers? I barfed once or twice before a gig, and that truly sucks, but once i get on the stage, it's just pure fun...

One thing i hate when performing, though, is that my hands and fingers tend to get tired quicker than when practicing...
