The whole day of the gig I could do nothing but think (obsess) about the gig. I couldn't eat or anything. But now after gigging steady for 3 years I have no nerves at all and I can relax have alot more fun.

Actually, I dn't get very nervous before gigs! I get a bit nervous - and I've only gigged about 4 times so far (we've spent far too long in the studio recording with various incarnations of the band.....)
Even filmed live for TV as well.
I do get a bit nervous, but by the end of the second song I'm sorted and really enjoying myself - hate coming off when I get to that stage!
We need to gig more! |

However, I've had what might be considered a mild anxiety attack... about an hour before a show where I'll be trying to combine 2 PA systems, 2 monitor systems, run a stage mix, monitor mix, FOH mix, play bass, sing backup, and play some keyboards with a 7 piece band (meanwhile Dad & Aunt are hearing band for the first time).
I felt like I was tied in knots (stress & anxiety) for the last hour before I arrived at the gig. Then during setup I was pretty 'alive' trying to get 7 musicians (all dear friends of mine) to stop shooting the shiite! and help me get the show on the road. Once we started playing the stress went away and a good time was had by all.

But I admire your coolness with your bass. Throwing up over 7 people, because you don't wanna hit your bass is pretty nasty!

the singer ordered 3 or 4 beers and said 'drink this fast'
i did and i got a bit calmer and more relaxed. so i ordered a couple more to the point where the guys told me to stop (not drunk or anything, but i was getting in to it, i like beer a lot)
i got on stage and i was fine. but i get like that every gig. |

Ive only recently decided it's time to salvage whats left of my liver and do it sober....Last night we did a radio station interview and an in-station set for them....I was sans brew and faired well. This Sat. I have a huge gig, which will be my first in years without the juice, so...we shall see how it goes. I'm bringing the Immodium, just in case!

However, once long ago in a galaxy far far away (in New Jersey) I did a little too much dope, and vomiting was the least of my problems. It actually felt good doing it, and it kept me awake for those few minutes. That was the one and only time I ever did dope at a gig. Boy was that embarrassing, there's nothing like a bass player who nods out 27 times during a song. The drummer was this big biker dude, and he told the guitar player to go pee on me while I was asleep (probably to cool me off or something). Then he thought better of it and gave me a few bennies. Those guys think of everything.
Note to self: self, remember not to do this again.
Note to others: don't try this at a gig! Savage winged lizards would be infinitely preferable to the audience reaction.

Scott makes a point of puking onstage every show. yeah it's gross, but you know what it's a show and people remember it. I personally sweat like a pig right before i play. lately i've been having equipment issues so it just adds to the fun! anyone else look like they just took a shower after a show? Fred from Repair Zone and Jonh from BassAlone just love cleaning up my crusty's!!!
That is a joke.. but damn, some of the clubs around here are baking!! no smoking though.. that rules... |

1. I had this massive boner from somewhere, don't know why it just happened and didn't go away until the second song.
2. I have developed gas right before we played. Silent but the GP kept looking back at me and I just point at the drummer. |

Ive never thrown up though, I might try doing that before I play, it might help. |

Uncle Mike, you are a funny dude.
Myself...I've only ever played once, and it was solo bass. It was at a coffee house gig at my school where everyone shared an amp. Started at 6:30. I skipped two classes that day and played throughout both of them, all of lunch, and from about 2:30 (when school was over) to 6:30 (when it started). I didn't actually play until about 8:30 or 9. I went and got my bass from the green room during the act before and I watched the act, completely calm. As soon as I was on stage, I got crazy nervous. The first thing I played had a few tapped harmonics in it, but my right hand was shaking so badly I only got one of the two notes out of the chord to sound properly. I got less nervous as I went on, and it was really exciting and new and cool. Didn't sleep for ages that night, I was so excited.

Stage fright only used to affect me when I played piano, because my hands would get all shaky. But my first bass performance was a solo performance where I played some Jaco stuff. I'd had it down for a week or so, so I wasn't very nervous, but I was a little shaky at first. But I can't say I usually get stage fright or get very nervous.

I was alot more self conscious then I thought Id be...but Im confident itll get better with time.

I don't get too awfully nervous, but one of my legs'll start shakin when I'm onstage if indeed I am nervous. Not like in rhythm, but like it's gone hyperactive, bouncing the heel up and down real fast with the ball of the foot and the toes still on the floor.
I did have the nervous-dump scenario a few weeks ago before I went up in a helicopter for the first time. It turned out to be an awesome flight, I loved the copter but I'm still deathly terrified of airplanes.
And finally: Once, I recorded a few guitar tracks while on LSD, and the bassist in that situation went "DUDE, you played some in-freakin-credible **** there!" - I had played well beyond my natural ability, apparently, but still I never did that again. Felt too weird. I loved them drugs for a few years and don't advocate it, but for pete's sake, don't do "responsible" stuff like driving, going to work, playing a gig, etc, if you're gonna be on drugs. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
