I'm going to use that next time someone asks me a stupid question.
Them: "Is that a regular guitar? It only has 5 strings and they are so big?"
Me: No Maam it's not, its an old australian instrument called a "dijaradoo". Quote: |

I do dislike it when my mother calls it guitar, but it's not a big deal. The only frustrating non-bassist encounter I ever had was at church, during band practice. The leader was playing a cd of some song that we were going to learn, and a guitar solo starts up. About then she looks at me and says, "Listen! This is your part!" Our guitarist had to explain to the misguided woman that I was playing bass, not guitar. However, I do appreciate that I was given a solo....
The bass definitely has a positive effect on women. Unfortunately, my bass usually gets more action than I do! (Damn that sexy Bongo..)

my reaction
"no **** kid! REALLY?!?!?"
the guy who owend the store who i am friends with with who is like, 20 yrs older than me (im 12) just got a ritter, he let me try it, and i was playing some bluesy thing, and a teen who thought he was cool walked up to me and said, woah ur good, can you play any 50cent?

What ticks me off is that in a guitar shop there's always:
a 45-year-old alcoholic bar-bander playing Lynyrd Skynyrd;
a 14-year-old playing Korn or Nirvana;
and a younger person or just stupid person running around asking the other two questions.
I've always hated hearing "Can you play 'Smoke on the Water?'" which I am asked whether I am playing bass, acoustic or electric guitar, mandolin. . . piano. . . glockenspiel. . . anything.
I hate Ritchie Blackmore.

| | | | The Good-Intentioned Bass Present My best friend, knowing my passion for music, gave me a musical present last Christmas. She went to Costco and bought this huge music book and wrote a really nice note in there about using this book in the years to come for helping me with my playing.
I was so happy with this gift, but the only problem was that it is a guitar book. I thought the bass was like a guitar? was one of the things she said. I appreciated her good intentions, thanked her for the gift and was very diplomatic and tried my best to explain the difference between bass and guitar. I don't think it did any good, because I received a little guitar keychain a few weeks ago on my birthday. This great book --it just sits there. The bass is not a guitar. There's practically nothing in there that is of any interest. |

It took me a while to explain that a bass is in fact different from a guitar.

Slap isn't one of those "you have to be really good to do" things. Once you reach a certain point, it's not what you play but your musical understanding. You will begin to ask others and yourself why something is a certain way, instead of how you do something.[/quote]
Floydbass, did i say i did it to show off?.....no!
I simply showed them sienfeld coz they asked me to learn it and when i did, i showed it to them.
I also undestand that it isnt that difficult, but having learnt bass for only a week before i could do the sienfeld theme and my frineds thought that was pretty cool.
And also, can you play bass as well as flea?

Hillel Slovak tought Flea how to play bass just so he could play in a band. He is now the best rock bassist's in many peoples opinion, Even people who do not like the Chili peppers. Flea has been there for every single tour with nivarna, silverchair, smashing punkins and many more. For ever single and album. He has become a role model for millions of bass players. Flea take a bow.

If there's theory work you don't fully understand, just check out that book because seeing it in a different light might help it lodge itself in your mind. I wouldn't just let it sit there - just have a browse through!

Oh but the best is when I asked why the same girls were sitting on the table where my amp is. Apparantly, its better than a spin cycle.

1.Can you play Seinfeld (or anything of a slap nature)

2.Since you are only playing one note at a time... isn't that easier than playing guitar? |

Wow, I'm getting old:,
I remember when first it was:
Can you play "Barney Miller?"
which was followed up a few years later by:
Can you play "Night Court?"
(The Barney Miller theme still rocks, though ) |

Like most guitar players, I figured it would be easy to learn how to play bass. Not only do I not enjoy it, but also I'm not any good. My ignorance and inability is your gain. .... Please save my ears from the horror my hands create with this instrument. | I like how he automaticly assumed that he would be good at it because he played guitar. This just proves just about everything allready said in this thread. :0

I played solo at the last school Coffee House (7 minutes per performer) and got a random yell where all I caught was Seinfeld (also that could've been someone making fun of me because a friend of mine thinks I look like George, only with hair and less weight ) and a yell for some Primus, but that was fine 'cause it was a friend of mine -- I obliged him with a quick run of the main riff from Too Many Puppies .
Only other bass thing like that I've heard was the standard "I'm gonna learn bass" after they failed at guitar. *sigh*
Good comments? A bunch from that solo thing, including my drama teacher (27) look at me as I was taking my bass back to the green room and said "Duuuuuuuude!" Her voice also went uncharacteristically high too .

"Shouldn't I slap in this song?"
"Duh, how do you play that?"
