Wow- I didn't expect to be able to play anywhere in Galveston in the foreseeable future, but we got contacted out of the blue for a gig at a resort way out on the west end of the island! So we accepted.
It was supposed to be a morale-booster for the staff there, they've been working insane hours trying to put everything back in order, 14+ hour days, 7 days a week! Now the place is back up and running, they had some guests out there, we played 6-9 Saturday nite, and 12-3 Sunday afternoon. We were warmly received, and the crew out there was dancing, smiling, cutting up, and the guests were as well. This was our first gig, and it went really well. We played a wide variety of music, from 60's rock, to 70's funk, to country, to some 80's Van Halen, to some Ozzy, just everything that cover bands do. We may be back next weekend, as well, management loved us, and the people in the condos were hanging out dancing on the balconies, yelling requests through paper hand-rolled megaphones, it was a trip! The manager said this was the first time his people had laughed and danced since Ike hit, and they had a blast!
It was a really great time playing for all these people in the midst of all the destruction. The new band name is "Stillworks", in that we play music that still works. The guitarist thought it up, didn't consult me on it, and it floored me, because the name of my first band was Stillworks, back in 83, in SoCal! So I guess I've come full-circle! |
