Right now I can outplay 1 of my guitarists and my brother, who I jam with fairly often, they are both very new to the instrument though(been playing about a year each give or take) my other guitarist kicks my a$$ though. Id say Im intermediate on geetar, which tends to piss of the guitarist I can outplay because I suggest a song to play and he kind of goes Chicken little on me like its impossible or will take weeks to learn. So I have him hand me his guitar and I play a little bit of it then hand it back to him and he shuts up(I really think he secretly believe bass is very easy but wont say it to me, smart guy haha). He's a cool guy and we're friends so its all good, I probably wouldn't do that to someone I don't know lol.

In fact, I play lead guitar for my own personal project, whilst playing bass for others (and for pleasure).
I do tend to play it like a bass - a lot of single notes, a lot of scale work - and I tune it in straight fourths, from D up to Eb - and I know more about guitars and their gear than any guitarist I know.

I just found that I didn't have the time or interest to learn guitar when I've already invested 18 years in the instrument and musical role that I like the best. |

If a solo comes my way though, it all falls apart, I just can't play lead to save my life. It probably has to do with my bass playing style of just holding down the groove and not being too flashy...
I'll always be a bass player though, I started at 14 and have loved every minute of it.

My brother in law wanted to learn how to play bass so I'm giving him lessons and letting him play my rig at church (13 yo newbs cannot be trusted with a Mesa Stack )
As my wife (who is a really skilled keyboard player) reminds me after every service, "your no guitar player" and then I ask if I was that bad and she reminds me that all of my fills start and end on the down beat. I just play what feels right, so what if they are probably great bass runs/fills played a few octaves higher.
I would say I'm fairly convincing to the non musicians. It just feels so unnatural to play those little strings.
Anyone else have problems playing a guitar with light or medium guage strings on them? I bend them and pull open chords out of tune if I'm playing on an electric with 9s or 10s. Could just be I have man hands

I can manage fairly well on guitar and use it for writing and while camping. I just happen to really like the sound and feel of a bass much more than guitar.
My bandmates were very surprised when I tried out my guitarist's stick. They were definitely not expecting that I could play decently well. He has an old Charvel that's extremely easy to play and I think I sounded better than I really am.
I'm not a shredder by any means and usually get my lead ideas from melodic bass lines.

No shredding like I can on the bass (too small for my hands, and I'm useless with a pick), but who needs that?

| | | | well you know how morons say that bass is easier cuz of two less strings? well i can say it is the other way around man. i started playing guitar for a friend of mine's band (they needed one AND they payed for my dean razorback SWEEEEEET!!!) i was so used to the thickness of bass strings that i hardly had to place my fingers on the guitar to get a note. this doesnt answer your question but just sayin |

I used to have a guitar on the side for transposing and checking tunes that sounded o.k. on bass. At times my bandmates and I switched instruments for fun, at one of these occasions the lead guitarist uttered some amazement about the way I soloed over his Strat, he wondered how I was able to become that loose in the hand.
I said that the lightness of the strings compared to those of the bass made me fly that way.
