Thank God for good trombonists...

Today I was rehersing for an upcoming jazz performance that I'm doing to celebrate my graduation from high school. I invited a trombonist that I met at a ska show a while ago to come do some songs with us.
We get all set up in the basement and start playing. I pull out some head charts and we play a few. After a bit my saxaphonist friend pulls out a funk chart that only has a tenor part written out. I figured it'd be a good time to give the other horns a rest so we start playing it. About 3 bars in the trombonist I invited walks over and starts playing the tenor sax part... in the same octave as the tenor. The chart is by no means slow or easy. The kid transposed the chart that was written for instruments in B flat (and treble clef) while sightreading. We all looked over at him in shocked disbelief. The kid had the most ridiculous chops I've ever witnessed outside of a pro gig. Then I realized that he's playing in the jazz band (that I will be playing with) at the college I'm going to next year. I'm definately excited for next year now.

That's cos the Tenor Trombone is pitched the same as the Tenor Saxophone and Trombone parts are often written in Tenor Clef Concert (ie in C) and the notes are on the same lines and spaces as Bb Treble Clef (in this case he'd just add two sharps to the key signature).

I learned trombone in a British Brass Band where all instruments are written in Treble Clef Transposing from Eb Soprano Cornet down to BBb Bass. When handed a Trombone part in Tenor Clef, I was told - "knock off two flats and read it as treble" and left to get on with it.

Whatever method he used, it was damn impressive.

just did a gig

in a funk band with a great T-bone player. The singer insisted on doing hip to be square, but had no T- Bone part. I had a bass chart, so the bone player wandered over and read mine. Not a hard chart by any means, but a bass with a Bone double sounds fat, especially when I played behind the P bass pickup to get a growl sound! So good sounding, the horn players called the tune again later in the night - singer, unfortunately, was too dumb to appreciate what was going on..

Cozy up to this guy you found, and learn to read his Bone parts - you'll pick up some good stuff that way...

Today we had another rehersal. A couple times the guitarist named some random funk tunes. Each time everyone in the room just happened to know how they all went. Hell the two trumpets even started playing harmony parts to each other. I nearly crapped myself about 5 seconds into Chameleon. It didn't hurt that I somehow managed to carress the mostly disgustingly funky tone out of my bass. After we ran through the previously planned tunes we ended up spending a good 45 minutes just jamming on funk tunes. My index and middle fingers were so dead that I figured it was a good time to excercise the ring and pinky fingers. Suprisingly easy to do btw.
