Regular people, muggles, bored, whatever you want to call non-musicians; they can't undersatnd our love of bass (read: GAS).
All my friends think im insane because i want to buy a carvin (fretless) when i already have a fretted Spector. No matter what language i speak or how i word it, the end is always the same. Even at concerts i'll say WOW thats a nice Ric and get all these weird looks.
My opinion? They're missing out! More bass for us! |

I just picked up an SWR Strawberry blonde II for my Double Bass, and am now just getting ready to head out and pick up an Acoustic Contra. No I can't really afford it, but it's all about tone man! Also, been GASing hard for a Ric.
Hell, my guitar playing friends hardly understand let alone my non musician friends or long suffering S.O.

When people pull that card, ( I can't believe you spend x on y or have so much of x, etc.) questioning them will reveal similar money sucking interests.
I will never get the collecting thing, like stamps, coins, comics, etc. nor do I give a care what people spend their hopefully excess cash on.

I've now got 5 'real' basses (not counting the 2 Ministar practice basses) but when folks say something about why I should need more than 1, I just point out stuff they have more than one of - that they can only use one at a time. Like my sister and dad having 3 or 4 camera bodies, and probably 10 to 12 lenses each. (And their collection of cameras and lenses cost them a heck of a lot more cash than my entire stable and the GK rig! I suspect my sister's 600 mm lens probably cost her more than what I've got 'invested' in basses and bass gear, for that matter.) And just about everybody I know has hobbies / collections / whatever that they spend money on. My husband probably spent more on his cigarettes in the past year than I did on buying bass gear, and he doesn't even have anything left to show for his purchases...

If you notice from my location, I'm from the American South. Around here -- and I'm sure its not just here but I'm going with what I know -- one of the big things is bass fishing. It's not uncommon to spend $20k on a nice boat. Talk about hard to understand! The thing might get used 20-30 times per year and requires serious maintenance as well. Campers, 4-wheel drive trucks, motorcycles complete the package. Talk about hard to justify!
At least I can make money with my hobby. I've been fortunate enough to [more-or-less] pay for all my gear, including a full PA, lights, and a trailer, from musical pursuits and not outta my regular job's pay.

She said, "why would you spend that much on a guitar if you mostly play bass?" I responded with, "You spend more on takeout coffee and smokes in 6 months than I did on that guitar." |

| | | Am pretty sure everyone I know (or who knows me) realises that I play bass by now, judging by the often tuneless twanging emanating from my room most days. But I like tho think they are happy in the knowledge that I am doing something I like and enjoy doing!
That's my excuse, and am sticking to the bugger!! Mind you, perusing these boards makes me wonder if we bass players understand each other, let alone "outsiders" understanding us!
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!

Non-musicians think that a $100 SX should be all anyone needs for the rest of their playing life.
To them a guitar (of any kind) is equivalent to any other guitar (of any other kind).
They just don't get it, nor will they ever get it.
No point in trying to explain why you need more than one instrument, much less want more than one of the same brand!

Like I stated previously, everyone has an interest or hobby that sucks their cash. Why only have one video game, frisbee, golf club, etc.
Easy to demonstrate that their interests / money wasters are just as worthless as ours. But like others said, some of us get paid / meet people with ours.
