This is a bit strange, I was a cornerback in football but a center in hockey.

I was an offensive lineman (played guard and tackle) and a defensive lineman (played DT and DE). I was also a catcher in baseball (high school and 2 years of college).

Played drums for 15 years, I only recently picked up bass guitar.

We have a strange thing in our band, a trio. Sometimes I get bored and my mind wanders, so I completely dumb-down the bass line to base simplicity to concentrate on more interesting things.

Other times I take the opportunity to goof around with something new.

And no one notices either way. Maybe I'm just not that good of a player

My drummer at last practice actually asked me if what I had just played was the same line I had always played. I told him yes. He then said, "but that's not what you played on our demo, was it?" I again replied, "yes, this is the same line I've been playing for 3 months now."

It seems like bass players are the only one that can actually hear what a bass is playing Which makes you wonder, if a deaf bass player is laying down a groove and there are no other bass players around to hear it, is it actually making any sound?

Coming from someone who replaced a (somewhat) deaf bass player (at least, deaf to low frequencies), yes, in fact its usually incredibly loud!

Had this happen numerous times with the mid section to "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz in my cover bands.

I've mostly played with really loud guitar players, and accepted early on that they don't really hear what I play - despite the fact that I always tried to add something to the songs beyond the root. However, a few years ago the last band I was in recorded a 4-song demo of our typical loud metal/hardcore stuff. During the initial mixing and engineering, the guitar player - I guy I'd known and played with for years - repeatedly asked the engineer to turn up the bass because he really liked what I did over some of the parts. That was a huge compliment for me; it was really nice to know that someone recognized what I was adding to the songs.

Oh, and I played offensive guard and defensive line in high school and defensive tackle in college. I've previously made that same analogy of bass playing to playing offensive line. On defense, there's plenty of opportunities to screw up, but at least you can get a sack every now and then - on offense, the best compliment you can get is to go unnoticed.

I've noticed this phenomenon a lot with two bassists in particular; Cliff Burton and Justin Chancelor. Every time I have played a part or even just mention "Hey, that's the bass playing that part of the song", I get blank stares and dropped jaws like I just gave cave men fire for the first time.

Examples: Seek and Destroy, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Orion; Schism, Lateralus, Right in Two, Aenima.

I play lines that are very close to the originals, but I don't obsess about it. I do try to throw in melodic fills and riffs that stand out on the original recording, and my band smiles in appreciation when I do that.

you can probably hear what I'm talking about in the demo recording in my signature.

yep, on it goes: OT/ DT (until my last year when I got moved to TE/ LB.) Catcher in baseball, and bass player for 23 years....Go figure!

...and the best way to describe what the bass does to those who don't know (i.e. MOST people), is to say they only notice it when it goes away... When the bass stops people leave the dance floor, the bar gets busy and the conversations start - 'cuz there ain't no boogie anymore (regardless of who or how many others keeps playing)!

Off-topic I know but I played WR/TE and P through high school football. During my brief stint in college I was again WR and TE, but in semi-pro ball I had gained a few pounds and moved to LB and SS.

Ain't it the truth! I'm working on a little original blues/rock project with some guys, and if I may risk sounding arrogant for a moment, I'll say that it's the bass lines I come up with that gives what we're doing it's original feel. They have no idea, heh, heh, and I won't tell 'em for fear of sounding like an ass.

Anyway, I agree, it's the bass that makes the magic.

Sadly, at one of our recent rehearsals I turned down my volume to nothing and faked the song. Just to check on the other band member's listening abilities.

Nobody noticed...

Hilarious, similar story for me. Was in a jam band, and the bandmates all wanted me to play like Lesh, Gordon, Wooten, etc, "play busier, faster!"

I played the next song only using root notes. They said, "that's the best we've ever sounded, nice job!" lol

Love playing that, as a rehearsal noodle, it upsets the guitarist, cos he knows it sounds better without the guitar part

My old cover band recorded 12/24 Sarajevo as done by T.S.O......There were only 4 of us so we had to do some arranging......I played the cello intro on my bass.....

When we recorded it, the engineer said "I really ike that intro you wrote for the song......It really leads into the piece."

"Ummm yeah....it's actually on the original. I didn't write it" I said.

He looked at me like there were two lobsters wearing Uggs crawling out of my ears.

Here's the recording:
