Granted maybe early versions of the song have a plain bass line, but not with Oteil's playing. And the version we listened to to learn the song was definitely Oteil.
My high school band director actually helped cure me of this. He had a rule that you had to listen, not just read. So in the middle of a song, he would cut us off, then point to someone and ask them what another section was playing. He used the embarrassment factor into forcing us to listen. I loved it when he would call on me (a tuba player) and ask about, say, 1st trumpet, and I would play to him what the 1st trumpet section should be playing, on my tuba. I was waaaaaaay better on tuba than on bass btw. I was just too caught up in "rock and roll" to keep up with it.

Nobody noticed... | I'm reminded of a time I was asked to cover at church, and I did something of the same because the bandleader was complaining that the bass sounded too loud. So I stood faking the song with my amp turned off. He still complained, but got a shock when he found out I'd not actually been doing anything.

He certainly made an ass of himself.

I have this happen repeatedly, despite my tuning my bass before every session and NEVER seeing him use a tuner. I hate playing with this asshat anyways, and I really am trying to stick with the band, but it's wearing thin.

in a cover band for 6 years and I still get "hey that sounded great" when it was part of the original bass line and i've done it the same way each of the 10,000 times we've played the song. It used to bother me, but now I judge my performance by the # of butts moving in the room and the occasional bass player that comes up and says "hey, sounds great."

It goes on and on and on. We are a bunch of superficial lambs. Most appreciate the ornaments over the foundation. | So what about those of us who are a scientist, engineer and CEO all in one?
BTW, the idiom is "sacrificial lamb."

Yes, I have had the same thing, actualy No Guitar Cable from bass to amp, only my wife (flute) noticed. Worship leader and guitarist both complained!

If you are not tuned to it you are screwing your vocalist. If their voice is off that pitch then you tune up or down to accordingly. Tell the guitarist to step-up to professional level. If you are incorporating a house piano then you must tune to that.

"Are you sure that's the right part?"
"Yup that's how the song goes"
"The old guy didn't play it like that"
"I learned it the right way and play the song the way it's supposed to be. That separates a good casino band from an average bar band."
And my favorite line from my drummer on having mostly backing tracks now.
"We just used to rock it out and it was ok"
"Yup but now we have nice backing tracks and sound like a great band instead of a bar band. We're better than that now."
