The things we do for our kids

My 13 year old daughter is learing the guitar, and has gotten kinda good. I'm proud just to hear her play. She lives with my ex but I get her quite a bit and we have a love of music in common. I finally feel comfortable in my bass playing to play along with her.

So she calls me last night and askes me what I think of the song Sk8ter boi from Avril Lavine. "Ummm it's OK I guess, why?"
Because Dad, I want to play it at my recital, my teacher said it was OK to ask you to play the bass with me, so would you?

One Itunes download of sk8ter boi - $1.29
Learning it to jam with your daughter - Priceless

That is one of the best things I ever read here. I'm really happy for you, that is going to be one special moment for you both.

Good luck on a great show.

Awesome! I can only hope that I can play a song with my son someday (he's taking piano currently). Those moments are indeed priceless.

Great example for other dads! If parents were more involved with their kids lives like this, this world would be a lot better place..

I'm not there yet, but my three-year-old loves to dance and play with my drum machine while I'm practicing

Well, Bassybill did that gig for his old man's 80th. You may have something to look forward to.

Nice, music has no boundaries.

Awesome. Much better than me playing Katy Perry for drunks for cash.

Have fun at the show, and cherish the time spent.

I plan on spawning enough musician children to start a band. I need a guitar player, a drummer, and a vocalist (let's hope my son/daughter on guitar can sing too!) Like Leopold Mozart did with his kids...except not so early. He had Wolfgang (THE Mozart) touring with him and his older sister at age four!

I had a similar experience in February.

My son, a freshman in high school, has picked up and learned a few songs on the bass and rhythm guitar over his 15 years, but did have three years of piano lessons when he was six. This year he was asked to play keyboards in a band at their high school talent show. After two rehearsals their bass player bagged on 'em. He came and sheepishly asked if I'd play Hotel California with them at the show. I did. I was really proud! He played the 12-string part on his keyboard. It sounded really nice and he did a great job. They got 4th out of 25 acts. Now he has got Desperado down pat on the piano and we're planning on bringing him up on stage with us this summer to do that number.

Now my 18 year-old wants to sing with his buddy's band... It's catching.

The fact that she asked you puts it FAR off the chart, IMO. I've tried many times to get my son to play his violin w/me, to no avail...

I got to do an open mike/food bank charity last year run by a middle school teacher. One of his former students is a up and coming guitarist, about 15. I got to cover the bass part for him as well on Hotel California. Kid nailed it really well. I had a ball!

It's a great feeling when you know you can bring them along a bit.

Very nice.... I can only hope my daughter is musically inclined and wants to do it... hey I'll Bieber it up for her or get some Spice Girls going... whatever she wants.... doesn't bother me, I'm already playing/singing Katy Perry Kesha and Taylor Swift for drunks... lol.. and about to add some more thinking lady gaga....

I wonder where my shame ran off and hid....
