I play different tunes using different styles, depending on what I want sound-wise. Fingers? Warm and punchy. Pick? Lots of attack and I can really dig in much harder.
But I'm always catching this "real bassists don't use picks" crap, chiefly from my son the bassist, but from others as well. I'm sorry, but I really think "real bassists" should be able to hold their own using either technique, AND know when to use them.
Apologies if that's not what you meant - maybe I just read it the wrong way. As you can guess, this is high on my Things I Hate To Hear Other Bassists Say list.

| | | | One of the other members in my band brought a friend to a battle of the bands we played at recently (not the bad part). She introduces me and tells him I'm the bass player. His first response is "Oh dude, i'm a really good bass player, we should have a bass battle". Now I have nothing against a little friendly competition, but don't preface t with boasting and don't bring it up right before I have to play a gig with $1000 as the 1st prize. |

I even got to play another bassist's bass after a gig because he LET me play it...and it was a Dingwall! I think if I'd known the list price before picking it up, I might have politely declined out of intimidation...

Unless he was playing just like Ramone's kinda Punk, I find it important to use different styles for different types of songs. |

The whole pick vs. fingers debate is getting really old. Who cares what someone else likes to do?
I'm not picking on you specifically, sorry if it seems that way

| | | | I've had 4 string basses all my life. Nothing particularly amazing; a Warwick RockBass, a couple of Squiers and an Epiphone. The only special one is my Italia. Anyway, I recently told my flatmate, who is a bassist and has some pretty high end gear, that I'm getting a 5 string soon. His response? "What do you need another bass for?"
"Oh, you're actually quite good, even though you use a pick." Last time I got that one I'd just played a 3 song set of YYZ, Californication and a Muse medley, all with FINGERS.

What is the point of a five string if two strings are tuned to the same note? A thumb rest? I don't get it. |

So all the local bass players assume I lost my job or my mind or both. They keep asking whatever happened to this bass or that bass. I tell them this is the best gigging bass I own. They just look at me like "Yep... He lost his job." Haha. Whatever.

Me..."I already own one"
Guy..."Well where is it, that's a real bass"
Me..."Well, it's the 3rd best bass I have, and I only bring two"
Guy...Odd look on his face
Me..."You know G&L was created by Leo"
Guy..."Who?"
Me..."The guy who created Fender, Leo Fender"
Guy..."Oh, so that is a Fender"
Me...done trying to explain..."Yup"
