Things You Never Want Recording Engineers To Say...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm here in a studio while the band is mixing their EP and I hear the engineer say, "Uh Oh! What did I just do?" Scary moment indeed.

So let's hear some more phrases that scare you to death in the studio....

Nothing. He just had something muted. It was the way he said it that had me worried.

"Of course I know how to record the bass! I just run the signal through this here compressor, then crank this here ratio knob up as far as it will go..."

I really like to record live...my biggest pet peeve is not being given the option to track individually or live.

Me: Where is that hum coming from?

Engineer: I don't know

Me: Can we get rid of it when we mix it down?

Engineer: Probably

A few days later during mixing......

Me: There's that hum. Can we take it out.

Engineer: Yeah, hold on let me......wait.....what just happened?

Me: What?

Engineer: Never mind, we lost the hum.......and the drum tracks too.

Me: ....then........then.......then ....

(True story. Happened last year at a friend's home studio.)

Actual quote from a recording engineer in the days of ADAT;

"Great tambourine overdub. Say, does anyone happen to know which track we recorded the guitar solo on?"

My personal favorite is still, "No, I didn't save! These things are supposed to be crash-proof!"

About 10 years ago, I had an engineer ask if we could re-do a take (recording live) and he said "Not your fault, mine... I think I got it figured out this time, let's try it and see."

In he defense, he mostly did jingle work with only 1 or 2 performers.
