I practise double thumbing on...anything. Tables, my clothes, chairs, air, rails.

I'm constantly tapping too.

So to answer your question...no, that hasn't happened to meI do occasionally get some funny looks. Oh and my ex used to hate it when I did any of that. She gave me the death look every time she caught me. Didn't stop me though haha.

Well, most people know me enough to understand, but I air bass every now and then.
I tap rythyms, whatever.
It's fun to air bass Guitar Hero style.

I was hanging out with my friends and they got drunk and started playing Bloody Knuckles. I don't drink and nobody expected me to play. But I just up and say, I want to play. And my buddy says left or right and all I think is that I need my left hand for bass. I need my left pinkie healthy for the neck. (You "play" Bloody Knuckles by each throwing a punch at each other's fist at the same time. If anything breaks it's your pinkie, up at the knuckle.) It's OK if I break my right pinkie - I really think this - cuz I just pluck with my index and middle. Except, um, I'm a rightie? And except for the neck I pretty much do everything with my right. 12 hours later I'm up taking Tylenol and Googling "boxer's fracture"; but at least I can still play!

p.s. It wasn't broken

I do this exact same thing!!! The only one who noticed it was another bass player, though.

On a side note, I find practicing without the bass can actually help develop technique. I noticed my finger speed increased just by practicing plucking random objects, as you said tables, chairs, armrests, stair-railings, etc...

I know exactly what you mean! I've been doing the whole 'thumb-pluck-pluck' thing on random objects for a while, never did manage to get the double pop thing to sound good on a bass though. Then one day I attempt it and it sounds perfect!

My girl friend has told me that I "play in my sleep"....sometimes the fretting hand, and sometimes the plucking hand.

My girlfriend catches me all the time,we will be in bed curled up,watching TV.Im doin it.She even brought it to my attention at my uncles funeral,is that a bad thing? We werent that close. But,I find the best place to do it is your steering wheel while driving.Excellent rebound quality from the cushion of the wheel, very simular to a string. At least in an Audi.

That's exactly how I tell who was close to the deceased at funerals.

I've done that to both hands, playing "Bloody Face"... Both times alcohol was involved......go figure, huh?

I was in a hard cast on my left hand for about six weeks. They gave me a soft cast when I did my right. I think it hurt more when the doc set it back than when I did it.

Back to the original topc....

Yea, I do it too......usually when I'm in between sets at the gym.

Never been caught air bassing, but I've had some funny looks playing Guitar Hero fingerstyle. Anyone else play that way?

I have, but my friends knew I was a bass player so they didn't think much of it..

Eventually, I pinched the strum bar with my thumb and index finger.. Found that easier for me.
