Took the kids (7 y/o, 6 y/o) to the gig today...

I had to. No choice. My wife was working and the babysitter was needed elsewhere at the last minute. It was either that or cancel. We had an hour set at the DC Folk festival.

Bottom line: Both of them (mine and her friend) were absolute, positive pros. They're ready for the road now.

We got there early (having gone to McD's on the way - bribery helps in situations like this) - and I had them run around a bit on the playground right next to the stage. For our set, the stage crew let them stay backstage with paper and pencils drawing stuff. I made sure to thank the women backstage because I don't feel its fair to have kids around unattended and make people feel like they have to watch them. So if they do anyway, they deserve your gratitude.

One thing is certain: I now have a new realization of what my wife goes through when she undertakes the daily chaos management that is part of being a Stay-at-Home Mom.

I'm a stay-at-home Dad. Gigs are my little reprieve, but I commend you and them for making the best of it. Sounds like they made you proud. Well done, all!

Matt

Well done!! My two(18 & 17 now) grew up coming to soundchecks, rehearsals, & MANY daytime gigs(& a few nightime ones) all thru their lives. I'd take some drawing stuff, a game or two & things were fine. Often they'd be the ones starting the crowd dancing!!!! :-)

At One out door gig, My Daughter found a space out front to 'build' a couch for herself-facing the stage-so she could watch the band "in comfort" ( built it outta a few cushions, a cuppla chairs-placed upside down & backwards) in the end, she was "chaise-lounge"-ing it facing our band in complete comfort! That even made the entertainment section in our city paper!!! She was about 5 or 6 at the time!!!!
They learn a good respect of the music Biz. Both have NOT taken up music atm...... ;-) both working as apprentices!

Sounds like a fun and positive time.

My stepdaughter (now 23) still remembers the first gig of mine she went to. She had a backstage pass and spent much of the night going (and dragging her mom) back and forth between backstage and front of house so she could proudly show her backstage pass. She finally fell asleep behind one of the sidefill monitors.

I bet yours remembers this for a long, long time.
