I read that in a book years ago and remember the story making me a little angry. It was no secret that the Colonel wanted Scotty and Bill out of the picture and took every opportunity to point out their shortcomings. Bill was being pressured to play electric but had to deal with a learning curve coming from the standup bass. Elvis found adapting to picking an electric bass relatively easy but Bill had a lot more of a stretch to make. The writer made it sound like either a) Elvis was a natural musician or b) Bill was somewhat incompetant... or some of both. Not the way I would see things. Bill Black was an excellent rockabilly slapper and it would have been nice if he would have gotten more respect from both the author of that book....and Elvis in the first place. Elvis would have had a tough time executing at Bill's level on the doghouse, I'm sure.

There's a similar story regarding Scotty's solo on "Too Much." After a number of takes, all of which Scotty played just fine, they did a take where he got lost on the time. Elvis knew it and, when they finished that take, he shot Scotty a smile and said "that's the one." But he was The King and we all know it's good to be the king.

If you listen to Daydream Believer, he boffs a note at the end before the last Sleepy Jean line...

My Three Sons was 'Chip Douglas', only one "s"
Played by Stanley Livingston who went on to become a producer and director
My favorite post TV show work he did was, "Attack of the 60 foot Centerfold"

Now I don't feel ashamed - I thought Donny was on bass, now I am guessing it is Jay. Why wasn't Marie on drums?

It's Merril. Jay is usually the drummer but I think is the other singer in this video.

And according to my sister, it's Alan on the Telecaster and Wayne on the SG.

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned D'Arcy from Smashing Pumpkins. Billy played all the parts except drums on nearly all the recordings. Figure Michael Anthony got called out and I love both these bands.

I need to step up for D'Arcy... She's not 'Faux', perhaps not skilled but she still recorded on MCIS and toured several albums for years.

I really only know anything about them because my mother and my sister are fans. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have known either.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Elvis recorded the bass on "(you're so square) Baby I Don't Care", and that it is considered a significant recording in that it was one of the first really prominent rock basslines recorded with an electric bass. Check it out, and give the King his props.
