I've seen some country bands that are boping around a lot more than this, I think its either they REALLY enjoy the music or their just annoying entertainers. Nothing against country. Just annoying.

i think the things that grind my gears the most are

1) bands that hog all the backstage space its like "ok i'm the big rockstar i'll sit here but my coat gets this chair my mic gets this chair and my bag gets this tabe"
then stand there looking dumb as you launch all there stuff in a corner to make room for the other 3 band's gear as well as your own LEARN TO SHARE SPACE YOU GREEDY B*^&$""£

2) bands that noodle the main riff in the song there about to play before they play it

3) bands that ASK the audience if they want an encore... there's 2 things wrong with this
1: a half hour set means HALF AN HOUR stop trying to hijack the stage there's other bands that need to go on you had your set now let someone else have theirs
2: if you really think your so wickedawesomefantastic that you can deliver encore's you wouldnt have to ask the crowd THEY'D TELL YOU!!!!

oh and my biggest gripe bands who you lend cabs, amps, strings, tuner's to that dont even bother to say thankyou or assume because its not thier gear they can spank the arse out of it

Im surprised at how many of you hate audible tuning, I think someone said before, is it horrid when orchestra's do it? Now I know where not talking about the phil-harmonic here but I was brought up in the school band program since 4th grade and just used to tuning that way. I just trust my ears more than a tuner, plus there hasta be a lil audible tuning so me and my guitarist can get perfectly in tune.

guitfiddle, I'm guilty for listing "Private Event" on my gig schedule on my site. My reasoning is that it lets people know that we do private functions (which are generally much higher-paying). That said, I never send a private date out in a newsletter.
+1 - it helps keep track of all gigs, not just public gigs.

What's wrong with that? I wear shorts year-round. They're comfortable. Why should specific genres own pant leg lengths?

- not wanting to bring any of their own equiptment and sending email after email about what equiptment we have
- not helping to set up the stage or pack up again afterwards
- coming to you in the middle of the show pressuring you to finnish so they can go on cos one or more of them want to go home
- always wanting you to invite them to play gigs with them, but never ofering a gig back
- taking your equiptment "by mistake"

oh and one more; bands that act like they're big rockstars

I can't stand bands with mismatched members. I am not paying to see a short fat guy singing and a guy who looks like lurch playing the mandolin. Keep it roughly the same size and shape.

A group of 16-18 year-olds make a myspace before they even record any music/have their first practice, and try to add as many people as possible.

Solo artists with a good band that gets no credit. i.e., bands where the singer claims the band as his own, when the lead guitar is awesome, bass is awesome, drums are awesome.

Screamo bands/___core bands. That's all there are where I live besides my own. (We're a folk rock band. But that's a different story. LOL.)

When bands record the vocals way too loud for the music, or the guitar.

When my old band switched from alternative to southern rock and started mixing me out, and then asked me if it was ok. I told them, and I quote myself on this, "Ka xlia ma pe tute, te malavel les i tu." They gave me a confused look and I packed my stuff and left.

Top five things other bands do that irritate you.

They don't play freebird when I yell the request. I mean are they freakin deaf? I go and see bands and yell "Freebird" as loud as I can and they don't play it. What's up with that?

I have yet to see an orchestra tune between every song, or make a big "production" out of it (noodling, wanking, etc. excessively) when they do tune. All I've ever seen did it once, before the start of the performance.

My band=
I drive my ass to practice to work on what we need to get done and they bring 4-5 friends along. Now we end up "performing" the songs that we know instead of practicing.

Somebody shoot me.

Wait a Minute! is that a blues trio playing a HENDRIX song?
John Mayer Trio's falsettos in that song > Jimi Hendrix Experience's falsettos in that song. Plus, I much prefer that bass playing and tone. I was never a huge Noel Redding fan.

Anyways, I've really enjoyed this thread and agree with most of it, particuarly on the subject of live tuning during a set, bands with no stage presence complaining about the crowd not reacting, and rock bands using music stands. Anyways, for my Top Five...

1. Bands that list in their bios a bunch of C-list national bands they've shared the stage with as a way of upping credibility. What it generally means is "We sold tickets for some promoter to open for some band who didn't have enough clout to bring in enough fans of their own."

2. Bad tone. The scooped guitar tone and ultra low-end bass tone may sound bad ass in your bed room, but it sounds like undefined mud in a live situation.

3. Bands that cover songs that require more instrumentation than the band has. I understand that it's possible to cover tunes that originally employ two guitars when you only have one guitar player through rearrangement, the bass taking on a more up front role, effects, looping, thick FOH mix, etc. However, trying to cover Bat Country with one guitar and no Eventide harmonizer is just going to sound lame. The same goes for covering material and missing out on important vocal harmonies. If you don't have an awesome falsetto singer, it may not be a good idea to try and play I Get Around by the Beach Boys and axe Brian Wilson's vocal because "it's not that important."

4. Purposefully misspelled band names. Sometimes it's clever. More often than not, it's lame. It's even more lame to take a perfectly fine band name, and replace any ending Ss with Zs. Can you imagine if we had The Eaglez, The Rolling Stonez, and The Outlawz? Maybe Miles Davis should have changed his name to Milez Daviz.

5. Bands who openly comment over the mic about the lack of a crowd on a sparse night. It's unprofessional and just makes the night drag on longer, IMO.

On the topic of dress, since that's of a debate in this thread - A band shoud look presentable. Whether you like it or not, how you look on stage is important. That doesn't mean you need to wear matching suits and ties on stage. However, people are paying to see you PERFORM. Otherwise, you might as well just perform behind a wall at your gig. And even Pink Floyd made that an artistic experience when they did that. As far as shorts on stage - It can be cool and acceptable or very lame and dorky depending on the situation. I'm not a big shorts fan to being with. I do have a cool pair of Rude Boy styled pin-stripped shorts that are very cool and work well on stage and the style of music I currently perform (i.e., modern rock from Green Day to Disturbed and some 80s). However, I wouldn't dress like a frat boy and play Pantera. It's all about the situation.

Maybe there's something to that music stand being unprofessional thing.

Must be why he left us to play with this guy..

Bassgod76, I commend your unrestricted stage presence. Your fearless use of a thong in public makes it obvious you have balls.
