Totally humiliated last night

Sign in to disble this ad
A band I sometimes play drums with got a gig at an outdoor celebration last night. It was supposed to be a great gig, backline and PA provided. All I had to do was show up with sticks. It was going to be fun. I get there and they want to do "Dixieland Delight" (yeah, I know...) I tell them I have never played that song, I haven't heard it in years and I would rather do something in it's place. I didn't want to be involved in a train wreck.

Sure as ####, they kicked it off, I missed tempo changes, etc. and it sucked. I looked like an idiot. I think that's the last time I play with them. I can't figure it out-- why they would knowingly take that risk?

If they knew you didn't know the song i would say "go ahead and do it, i'll count it out to start then you are on your own B***tches! "Lets see how well you play it without someone keeping time for you"

I should have left the stage for that one. No doubt about it.

Experience comes from past mistakes.

In those situations, there's two options: play an annoying blues solo over the entire tune until the band stops in disgust, or else just do random bass slides up and down the neck, out of key and time.

But in all seriousness, that sucks. Sorry.

Even better then. That'll seriously stop the jam.

Just out of curiosity, how did the song go over with the crowd?

An Alabama song played in Alabama?

I'm betting it went over great regardless of the train wreck.

I've been in that situation and just wanted to walk into the crowd and slap each and everyone of them for liking what just happened.

I would have played the entire thing in rumba clave and told them they were off time and missing cues.

Yep, if they count out the song, just don't play. See how far they get.

Guys, a pro does the best he can to fake the song in that situation. You don't goof up on purpose, you don't simply stop. You argue and tell them off afterwards, off stage, if inclined. On stage, in front of a crowd, you try your best.
