She will if you and the wife tell her it is. I'll tell her too! Some sensible martial arts ed would be okay too, but knowledge is power. To be wise to the ways of the world, and know that it's ok to not go with the crowd- that is most meaningful.

A healthy dose of self-esteem will trump the need to be 'popular'.

You guys are a fundamental part of her excellent attitude. Way to be.

Sounds like maybe she'll be a bass player...

Sounds like a great life to me. My biggest regret in life? Not being able to have kids .

Find some to get involved with. An engaged heart doesn't have time to mourn what it doesn't have! Plenty of kids out there who ain't getting the benefit of their parents. And it doesn't much matter how you're involved, just that you are- they'll know it.

They sort of become your own after a while anyway.

+1 True and a nice sentiment.

Thanks (and to the others for their kind words).

Actually, she plays clarinet in the high school band. She started to show her courage and independence before boys. She knew I was never a fan of the clarinet. So at 11 years old, joining middle school band, she told me that she didn't want me to be upset that she wanted to pick the clarinet instead of any other instrument. Even if she were seeking my approval, I was thrilled that she came to me determined to play what she wanted, not what she thought I wanted her to play.

I've supported her ever since and never said again that, "the clarinet is the duck of the instruments."

Played the Bassoon for 4 years in Jr. High and High school... Played it like a sax when I would jam with the jazz band! Music teacher would just shake his head... I made the bassoon a cool instrument!

Nice!! Don't mistake my attitude here- I know full well I'm 'stepping in it!'... Music is excellent in all its forms, manifestations.

Well, there are exceptions. But none of them are instruments. I will stop now.

Not taken in a bad way. You make the best of what you have and make the fun you want out of it. It is not a very common instrument in schools, or at least back in the 60's... Had also played clarinet and sax, so using it like that, unique sound to jazz music, was........ interesting to say the least.

Forward thinking. The only people who ever made a difference musically to anyone were forward thinking. Great.

I'm new here and just wanted to say this is a great thread.

I wanted to play the bassoon when I was young. Thought it looked and sounded cool. Believe I could dig some jazz bassoon!

That instrument might be very well suited to Persian-style melodies. Iv'e always thought it a nimble kind of a sound, even though it's low-register.

Ever listen to any Anouar Brahem?

My son did the same thing with the flute... he said he tried the others out and he didn't care if he was going to be the only boy, the flute was what he wanted to play. And he did .. 5th through 12th grades. And we got medals at the last band concert of highschool for it :-) i was a proud mom. A lot of times he was the only boy, but he was always there, right in the middle of all the girls and he treats girls just like any other friend.

He's always been a strong kid though.

My daughter played a baritone solo for a school solo night recently. I was more nervous sitting in that room than taking the stage in front of thousands. I was so proud of her. I'm glad the love of music has been passed along.

My daughters both play too, the 12 year-old plays violin and the 14 year-old plays string harp. They're both already pretty accomplished, and they sing in an Episcopal/Anglican style choir with a pretty danged brilliant musical director. I don't know if they'll choose a career in music, but I sometimes wish I had their ears.

It is cool indeed to see the music pass along. I'm now the hack of the family... and I'm happy to take my seat! I consider myself utterly bestowed upon- my world is rocked.

Here's to the kids, whatever they've got- and to watching them become themselves. I'm gonna go drink to that right now...
