Under age in a Bar???

Oh, man this is gonna be a venting thread, sorry if i come off as pissed off.

Thursday nights show was at a sports bar called Tremors, a local place that usually college kids hang at on thursdays and weekends. My band has played there twice before and got really taken care of by the owner, Dennis. Gave us free pizza, pool for the night, drinks, and was a really cool guy to everyone.

The two nights we played were on tuesdays, and i was told the place was 18+ not 21+ like most places around here. This worked for me since im 19 and not able to "get in" to 21+ clubs. This allowed me to hang out after the show rather then having to leave right after we were finished. So the third time we were planned to play there i invited abvout 6 or 7 friends to come watch.

Unfortunately at the third show Dennis was not present, so this led to A-Hole security guards who think they're king. My friends showed up, had to pay (they were on the guest list but again A-Hole security) and were kicked out 5 minutes ;ater since they were not 21. I saw them leaving and they told me they were having to leave. So i talked to the A-hole that was running the night and asked why this night was 21+ when before it was 18+. He said, well its always been 21+, but he then said he would talk to the owner, and 5 minutes later he was yapping with some "friends". my band was in the process of soundcheck, but i wasnt evn plugged in yet because of this, so i walked up to him and said, hey ill be waiting outside with my friends, i can wait as long as you can.

So i waited, maybe 10 minutes, and decided to come back in, my drummer was trying to talk me back on stage, but i said no, and turned around and BEHOLD! there was dennis, i told him the situation and he rounded upthe A-holes and said, hey , i know this is the rule but this is my friend and were making an arrangement, now if you F--- with me ill F---ing fire you and youll be on your way, so be cool and lets have a good night.

He talked to my frioends told them to stay away from the bar, and the night went on. i got my stuff set up, and played a kick ass show, i shows the A-holes what kind of band they were dealing with and what they could have missed out on.

Oh, and my friends were never refunded their money...

21+ really is a bit of a joke. Thank god it's not like that here.

I think that age limit is pretty bogus,it should be 18 to party/get in 21 to drink...

thats what it's like around here...

yea hes a cool guy. well that gig went great, we rocked the place, and they want us to play again, this will be our 4th time there. we are scheduled for august 15. and im going to call dennis ahead of time, to avoid this from happening again.

i think the drinking age is fine, but the bar is a separate room and side of the building than the stage. 18 for the satge, 21 for the bar.

well for me its was ok, although some bars actually have to escort me in and out, but this place was just cautious of my friends.

Yes I'm very glad that Britain isn't like that or my musical education would have been shorter!

Over here - it is 18 to drink - although when I was growing up it was never checked - and 14 to get into a bar/pub - so from about the age of 13 I was able to go and see bands anywhere.

I went to school over the road from the local University, which had several bars which put on bands for free and also played great music - so I can remember going over ther with friends from school and they would put on whole new albums and we would just sit and listen - sometimes we even went with teachers who were into music - I can remember one guy who was really into differnet music - but got very embarassed when we started calling him "Dad" !!

It's 16 or 18 here depending on the kind of venue and/or on how long into the night you want to stay. If a place sells alcohol and you can't legally drink, you can still go there but they are not allowed to sell alcohol to you (ID check).

But I never heard of problems playing in a band.

Nothing like a bit of angst to fuel the music, eh?

Last time we played at a venue called WKD in Camden Town, London, we were headlining and expected to have about 50 minutes on stage. However, the previous band was allowed to overrun in a big way and we were also told we'd have to finish early to let the DJs set up for the second part of the evening.

Grrrr... we only got about half an hour on stage (31 minutes and 6 seconds from introducing ourselves to saying goodbye) but we produced some intense music in that time!

yea, in that anhgst on stage we played our 45 minute set (hour minus take down and setup) and thought we were done, but just started jamming for a good 5 minutes. then we played a new song that we were working on, a little mellow but it was cool.

before that though we asked dennis "hey is this alright?" and he said "yea! you guys do whatever the f*ck you want"

i hear you bruce about those french farmers!

yea, security guards are ass-holes but thats their job. i choose not to mess with them because frankly their body builders and they work in teams. i choose to get on their good side or have their manager on my side, so their forced to bend over and take it. the drinking laws in this country are outrageous, I've been in some bars with no problem frankly because I look over 21(17) but yea i've been kicked out of a few, violently and passivly. one thing for sure. bar fights are fun as hell.

I hate that most places dont let you in just to see the band... grrrrrr. though some places are cool if you just say your there to see the band and youll drink a few sodas theyll let you in.

i don't know the law in the USA. But here (Netherlands, Belgium) you can go to festivals and bars and you only have to look like you're 15 or so. For some kids drinking doesn't seem to work out..lol

probably christianity is the reason for those laws in the USA..dunno.

Yeah, I was at this Voodoo Glow Skulls concert at SLO Brew (yes a bar, but all ages show) and we started moshin and some people got thrown out by the security there and they said we couldn't mosh (which kinda made it less fun, but good show still

i totally agree, im kid on the block that buys beer for the freshmans. i know most west-europeans have very good drinking policies and have a true pride is liqours and beer, ours is commercialed out and our beer has so many adjuncts its not even funny, we need the bavarian purity law here!

By "adjuncts", I'll assume you mean water and piss. I think we all know the only alcohol worth drinking from North America is Canadian.

On a related note, I played a bar gig where we were in desperate need of a drummer because the regular was out of town. I have a 19-year-old friend who can hack it, but we figured we would have to just sneak him in (he doesn't look old, though!)

He's a pretty sharp kid (hah, smart drummer, yeah yeah laugh it up

) and just called the county sheriff's office. The dispatcher checked and found out that he didn't need any sort of license or work form or anything. Apparently the law around here is that if you are in the employ of the establishment, you don't have to be of legal drinking age as long as you aren't actually drinking.

Law may vary from area to area and club policy may change. For Friends of the Band, though, I don't think it applies.
