The set up...
So I was asked by a fellow bass player who works alot in Connecticut to fill in with a hip hop band he is playing with, (I am his direct backup for pretty much all the bands he works with, due to getting double booked often). I was given a week notice.
Was very excited about the gig, because I know the drummer and guitarist are solid players, and the MC definitely has a name for himself in CT, plus this is the type of project that I wanted to be involved with for a while now.
No charts, no recordings, so i was a little concerned about taking the gig, but was able to meet with my bassist friend and run through the licks at GC for about 20 minutes 2 days before the gig, just to get them into my head. The gig is roughly and hour long with about 8 actual songs and two complete improv songs. I was told the Guitarist had rough tracks that he was going to send me...those never came through.
Day of the gig comes, meet with the guitarist early at the venue, find a quiet corner and refresh the licks...about 20 minutes of time again...I feel more comfortable about the whole thing, convinced there will be a few flubs, but due to the improv nature of the gig, figure I can make it passable....until....
Sitting outside having a drink...I notice a little commotion with the staff....Doug Wimbash was at venue...
Now I know he didn't sit and watch the band, but definitly one of those feelings of, really on a night that I feel least confident with my playing a True pro had to swing through.
I do believe that Doug's event at Sullys Pub in CT is coming up at the end of September if you are a CT resident i have gone the past few years and its always an awesome time! |
