Vocalist is Learning Guitar!

Gotta share this story even though it doesn't reflect well of me....

Ricky, our part-time vocalist / roadie / gopher, is learning guitar and brings his flat-top to our gigs. He doesn't have a great ear when it comes to recognizing keys, chord changes, etc. but I'll give the guy credit for trying. On the off-tunes, he'll sling the guitar on and try to keep up. He's not amplified so no harm done.

The other evening I noticed Ricky had his back to the audience, staring at my bass rig while strumming away. When asked why, he told me he was watching my Peterson VS II tuner (always on) perched on the rack-top to follow the chord progression. Apparently its not too difficult if the bass player pedals root-V for the majority of the evening.

Am I really that flippin' predictable? I really need to start mixing things up a bit more.

Riis

mess with him at practice by detuning your bass to where it plays with the tuner a bit so it reads something like a very sharp Eb then a very flat E just to give him something to think about lol.

you need to plug a looping mp3 of random notes from your iPod into your tuner.

haha, damn. If it works, you don't by any means have to change anything up. don't question yourself just because another musician isn't baffled by your lines

sounds like (although not so good yet) he's got quite drive and determination. that's good. keeeeperr
