Warning, guitards at work! (relic content).

I found myself on youtube today watching this relic instructional. Watching some guy hacking into finish like this makes me feel a little light headed!

Oooouch!

Thoughts?

I don't mind good relics like those done by Nash and Dark Horse here on the forum. I do object to relics that look like they were done by somebody who has never seen the wear on an old guitar.

I saw about 10 seconds of him using a saw, then turned it off.

I didn't even get that far. The 14" double-cut file (with no handle....) was as much as I could stand

I never understood why people reliced their guitars.

I mean, just play it for 20 years and then you can have authentic marks....

Let me caution: we have a talkbass rule against saying how stupid and ridiculous the relic fad is, no matter how stupid and ridiculous it is.

Thats not a northern thing, thats an idiot thing

But that sound... knowing what it was caused my skin to crawl. And no kidding when he said it was the worst relicing job ever! I'm not a huge fan of pre-reliced gear, but if you're gonna do it do it right!

LMAO I read some of the comments.

"OMG YOU"RE RUINING IT!" pfft. okay so he likes his stuff to beat up and doesn't wait 80 years to do so. Honestly buffing off the finish doesn't make it play any worse.

Yeah, but if you're gonna do it, do it right. That didn't look like a guitar that has been "loved" for 40 years; it looked like some 17 year old took a metal file to it.

Good thing we are looking at a HACK job that no one in their right might would even think about referring to as a relic job.

I don't think he understands that finish is nearly impossible to scuff in any sort of decent manner. Nitro relics. Poly does not.

What I can't understand is why some people confuse relic-ing with abuse. Wear-and-tear on the finish with slight dings is realistic... but when the actual wood is damaged... its been abused!

In the video, I only lasted until the file actually started scraping wood... Couldn't watch!

I watched it and laughed. It is just a guitar. It is just an object, that apparently cost the kid very little money off CL.
