We played a killer gig last night but...

Well, I guess you all remember my last report on how last weeks gig went. This week we were playing a rather large indoor festival and we rehearsed long enough to get us ready to do this. The bill had seven bands and we were third on the bill.

As I said in my last report, this would probably be the last gig we were gonna play with Ade "Dark One" as our bassplayer. When I picked up our drummer Josh "Caveman" and Ade at the meeting point, Ade was all smiles fresh as a daisy and ready to let it rip. His enthusiasm was mirrored by the others and we were ready to have our revenge on last week's disastrous' performance.

Ade's mother came by all the way from Dublin to see her son's band perform and we all joked that since she gave birth to "Dark one" she would be the "Dark mom" and basically had a good time. When it was time for us to perform, we were firing on all cilinders with a good sound system providing us the stable base we didn't have last week, me and Jack T pulled off our twin leads and played enthusiastically, knowing that we were kicking some serious ass.

Afterwards we were told that we can do several dates in southren Europe: Spain, Italy and Greece in the springtime of 2009. We were elated but our high was about to come crashing down.

Because Ade and members of the Band Serpent steel began to hit the bottle extremely hard and they began to behave really badly, interrupting performances of bands who played later on the bill. Fearing that his drunken rampage would jeopardise our place on the tour, Pascal "Beastings" called us all together and said that indeed this was the last time we played with Ade as our bassplayer, he's on a self destruction corse and is taking us all with him.

The last I saw of Ade this night was when he emerged hobbling from the men's room with the puke still clinging to his mouth, white as a sheet and completely wide eyed before running towards our buddies from Serpent steel to have another round of free drinks with them. Josh told me that he and Ade would ride along with a bus from another band, basically giving me permission to leave the scene before things got even uglier.

I kinda feel sorry for the dumb **** but he did it to himself, we played a KILLER gig but it was thwarted by his misbehavior because of excessive drinking.

So as it stands now, Slavantas is on the lookout for a new bassplayer, and from what I understood, there's actually a lot of guys who want to take Ade's place, I'll keep you guys informed.

The aftermath: Warning, bass abuse ahead

I just got off the phone with Beastings, our singer and he filled me in on the gory details of what happened after I left.

Ade went from being a happy drunk to a "Let-me-tell-you-something" drunk not so long after my departure and started to try to pick a fight with seemingly everybody. He got his fight alright... with the organiser of the festival. There was considerable effort and manpower needed to tear them apart. Ade then proceeded to smash the windows of the guy's car with his bass before deciding to smash up his bass too, from what Beastings told me, the instrument ended up in four pieces.

I can only imagine the considerable negotiating that Beastings had to pull off from keeping the organiser to remove us from the upcoming tour I mentioned earlier.

The uncertain ending of this story was that Ade was still there at the venue at four in the morning locked outside in the rain, getting his amp soaked and pounding on the door pleading to have another beer.

One of the many reasons I quit drinking 14 years ago. What a way to mess up an awesome opportunity. Don't worry, you'll have no problem filling his position and doing those shows. It just sucks to be him.

the number one reason not to drink heavily at gigs is some people dont know the person who comes out when they are wasted.

Number two reason not to drink too much at a gig: you might forget to go home.

This Guy needs to get into a program
The drinking will ruin his life...he is clearly in need of help with his addiction....Getting rid of him will be doing him a favor in the long run

this is a really saddening story, just goes to show you that responsibility is also about taking care of yourself

that's pretty effed up. but i wouldn't recommend AA for him. i'd recommend sitting him down and explaining that his CHOICE to drink too much and continue drinking too much has caused serious problems for the band, and most importantly himself as an individual.

only if he's such a baby that he needs someone to remove his responsibility and tell him he has no control- which is a lie- should he visit AA. but if that is the case, absolutely he should go. and consider a very late abortion as well.
