Wearing gloves while playing?

Sign in to disble this ad
So it's freezing down here in Florida (literally......32 exactly on the thermometer) and hardly anyone has real heating in their house... including the drummers house where we rehearsed. I had my knit gloves (pretty much thin mittens with fingers) on when I got there and decided to try playing with em on.

It worked! Got stuck a couple of times doing rakes because the palms have little grippy dots on em, and wore a hole in the index finger, but I was able to play. Am seriously considering buying another pair for this weekends gig because my hands get cold enough in normal weather...... Which leads me to a question.

All you northerners-do you ever wear gloves while playing? I've seen people do the fingertips cut off thing, but I mean entire gloves. Any preferences as to brand and type? Any gig stories?

*newly shivering in florida*

FWIW, I keep a pair of gloves in the gig bag of my #1 bass (that stays with the band's equipment) at all times . . . they have been "prepared" . . .

the glove for the left hand (fretting hand) has all four fingers removed and the one for the right hand (plucking/picking) has the thumb, index and middle fingers cut off.

Works VERY good for those outdoor gigs in the wintertime . . . . . .

great topic a smart reminder of something we really should have in the gigbag for that situation, gloves would do wonders on a freezing gig.
tip o' the hat for a good idea!!

i have really bad circulation in my hands, so even when it's not especially cold i start cramping up. i usually have the heat cranked in any room that i'm playing in, but at times where i haven't been able to, i have resorted to cutting the very tips out of the fingers of gloves.
fwiw, i find that my picking hand needs to be warmer to perform properly than my fretting hand does.

I have a pair of glove inserts with the two fingers on the right cut out and the tips of all the fingers on the left cut out. But I only need them when the wife decides we need to save the environment. We have heat here

32? it's actually 0 degrees here right now, at least it's warmer than yesterday .

Fingerless gloves are the only ones I can play with. Also, don't know if you can get them there, but we can get these little chemical packets that you break and they create, handy to keep in your pocket for a cold show.

I bet a pair of nice tightly-fitting leather shooting gloves would work.

I have played Christmas gigs outside twice this year using mittens without fingers. Worked out great and I'd do it again.

I've used those stretchy knit gloves a few times when we've been practicing (check my profile pic) because we haven't had the heat on in our rehearsal space. It's been brutal! The gloves work fine.

Gets DAMN cold here in Winter too- I haven't for yrs, but have done so in the past- played w/ gloves- tho the ones with the 1/2 fingers- so your finger tips are exposed!! These work great!!!!!

Etienne Mbappe only plays with gloves on! Except they are silk or something and probably don't provide any warmth. But they have tight bands at the wrists so the fingers don't get loose

I have a pair without fingers. But, I would never use full gloves. Best thing would be to wear them through the day and let the movement on stage keep you warm through the gig.

There have been a few outdoor gigs where I wished I'd had gloves, but I can't play with them on. (Of course in MI "gloves" are probably a bit more unruly than they are in FL) The ones I have laying around are pretty robust.

You don't want to go too tight though, because that will decrease circulation, and decreased circulation makes your hands get colder

I've used the thin gloves. cant do it on my right hand - cut the fingers out. i can manage on the left but prefer those fingers cut out too.

it seems I get most of my outdoor gigs in the fall . . . odd (or in 100degree summer)

It beats playing with completely numb hands.
I had to do an outdoor gig a couple weeks ago, and could not feel my fingers till the last song.
