| | | | Wedding Gig: GONE WRONG

This is a story from my brother.
He was asked to put together a trio to play at a wedding, so he invited his tenor sax friend, and his drummer friend. At the wedding, they saw a fountain of some type of red, fruity alcohol. My brother and the sax player, drunk about 8 cups, after having "a couple" of beers, and smoking weed. And they were off to play. The drummer [sober, (and unknowing of the others being wasted and baked)] counted off the first song. My brother didn't open his eyes one time during his bass playing, and the sober drummer was wondering why the sax player was laughing so loud during the reception. But they played a great gig, got payed, and blew it on more weed.

I don't know, just making something up.

sounds like they did the gig just fine. never bothered me if anyone got a little wrecked on my gigs as long as they played well, did their job, and didn't get arrested in between sets. it's only when they started to suck that i would get mad.

This is why so many catering halls treat musicians like low level servants.
Tell your brother and his friends to act with some dignity. It'll make it better for the next band that goes in. |

Tell your brother and his friends to act with some dignity. It'll make it better for the next band that goes in. | In 40+ years in the music business, I've done my share of drinking and drugging. The first time I didn't get called a second time by a leader due to my behavior on the job though, I figured out in a hurry there's a time to party and a time to work, and seldom do the two mix.
I have too much pride in my craft to do anything that impairs my ability to perform at my best. I've been at this a long time, and a couple of walking cliches like the two idiots described in the original post just make it more difficult for those of us who consider music to be a profession to be treated like professionals rather than fools. I wonder if they drove themselves home after the gig. |
