Weird stuff at a gig...

Today I played with my band at an "American Day" (so with Harley Davidsons, Trikes, muscle cars etcetera), but at the moment we arrived, 2 hours before the gig, the first bikes and cars were already leaving.

There was no soundcheck, at least not the kind I'm used to. The sound engineer said: "Just play something..." to the complete band. So we just played one song, and after that the sound was still horrible. When I signed ánd said I wanted less keys, more guitar and more backing vocals (which happens to be me) on my monitor, he just raised his shoulders. I couldn't really make out whether he didn't understand, didn't know or just simply didn't want to do it. The monitoring ánd the FOH sound was horrible the complete gig, which might have explained the fact people were standing 20 feet from the stage. We played quite well, so that's not it...

The weirdest thing was the atmosphere in the audience. It wasn't fun, it wasn't lame, it wasn't anything, really. There was no atmosphere, everything just, well, was. There was free beer.

On the way home we drove about 70 mph when we were overtaken by a bus, which are only allowed 50 mph. Weird.

It seems that the crowd was there for the bikes and cars, plus the free beer, and your band showed up after most folks had had their fill of the festivities earlier on. You played for a tired and beer buzzed audience, along with the fact you had a sound tech who didn't seem to care about the job they were supposed to be doing. It doesn't sound like much fun to me with what you experienced. I've had my share of gigs that didn't seem to amount to anything in terms of audience reaction, etc, which for me has happened at county and state fairs here in the U.S. You just sometimes run into a tired and apathetic audience, and the gig is neither good or bad, just ' blah ' as I would call it.

Nope, it wasn't fun. But the beer wasn't free for everyone, just for the bands, as usual

I would have asked one of the guys from thw sound company for a card, so I know who NOT to use in the future. Sorry about your bad day.

Sound guy probably was passed out on the floor, and the guy behind the board had no clue.
