so we're a five-piece classic/party rock band...it's taken a while to get the band focused correctly but we finally have four out of the five players in sync. Last night we lost Drummer #7 after only a couple or three months with him. We're like Spinal tap over here.
Age does not equal maturity...we're mid-late 40's and still the hyperactive drummer flips out when he sees somebody hug his wife....throws sticks, screaming F-bombs, runs offstage to confront the guy and leaves. With us still standing onstage.
One of our fave fans is there with a date: a guy who visits occasionally from Guam. He comes up and says he'll fill in, does so, and manages to finish the rest of the show...two more sets!
Thankfully this keeps ME from having to play drums after a 20+year "haitus" while my substitute bassist- who's in the audience also-takes over.
Maui is the home of many retired and semi-retired professional musicians, and soon we are also joined by a professional touring guitarist who happens to also be the guy who played on the Sass Jordan record we cover. Now we have 3 guitarists and a new guy on drums in a small space, but we're totally pulling it off.
The night finally ends with:
-Guam drummer saying "thanks, enjoyed it!"
- Bar owner/manager in line to be our next drummer
(he's definitely a cool guy and supposedly a very reputable musician)
- A new second band being formed with singer, BL, retired pro guitarist and myself along with possibly the top pro drummer on the island (this had apparently been in the works for a while but I wasn't informed of it until last night)
The Lord works in mysterious ways...this one gig solved a big pile of problems (not listed here) that had been stewing for a while and that I had no hope in ever getting resolved. Hope springs eternal!
