What else could go wrong?

This past Friday I had the gig from hell!! It was horrible! A veritable comedy of tragedy......

First off, work was a real bear last week. Friday was icing on the cake, and my mood could certainly have been better. It did not improve upon my arriving at the venue and seeing that the teeny little corner we had to play in was dominated by the drum kit. He had come by earlier in th eday and set up his kit He'd set up in the corner, and must have had at least as much room back there as the "stage" area left for the rest of us. (Not really a stage, just a section of floor with no tables.)

So the guitar player and I proceed to load in the PA (The drummy was long gone by this time, and the singer suffers from L.S.D. and only carries what he uses ie. his microphone.)

In the trailer along with all the crap I notice the drummer left his big freaking monitor speaker. Sure he can roll the box full of drums out early, but he can't drag this monstrosity out of trailer and set in in place. So I drag it out, and wrestle it with great difficulty behind the drums where he has tons of room.

I then proceed to run cables and try to get everything else set up. I probably have a 4x3 foot area in which to set up my mic and bass rig at this point.

15 minutes to show time:

The drummy shows up, and complains quite loudly about where his monitor is set up. That's not where it goes and it's just going to cause feed back. Then he starts to mic his kit. My bass was on it's stand in front of the drums and he says "This can't be here, I'll knock it over". So I grab my bass and move it out in front of the mains (Pretty much out into the bar and off the stage).

At this point, I'm more than just a little annoyed.

Then the drummy moves my bass rig so he can put his monitor out in front of his drums like he should have done when he set up hours before. My personal "Stage" area now measures about 2X3........ This is the point where I just walk away. We have 5 minutes or so to go, and if I say anything, it's not going to be nice.

So with 5 minutes to do, the singer shows up (This is aggravating, but completely normal) The drummy comes out side complaining that there aren't enough mic cables in the cable box. (Lemme see.... You own a box full of drum mics and not a single cable?..... ) I begrudgingly go back inside and hand him 2 of my own personal cables. (I own one mic, and have a well stocked bag of cables and other necessary things.)

So we start the first set.......

The guitar player uses a Marshall 4x12 with a head that sits on top of it. He always leans the Marshall back against the wall, and it never looks real safe, but it seems to work for him. Well at this place, there is no stage, the floor under his rig is the same faux hardwood flooring that's everywhere. So about 3/4 of the way through the third song the guitar suddenly cuts out. I kinda look over my shoulder and am amazed at the sight of the guitar rig lying face up on the floor.

It made some awful sounds after he picked it back up, and I'm thinking we're going to be playing acoustic all night long.

I think the big deal was the cables were all plugged into the back of the thing and it landed right on top of them. Anyway, after about a 20 minute lull as he tried desperately to make things work, we get the guitar back up and running. (I am SO glad he doesn't use a tube amp!)

It was about this time that the amp running the subs started making a very weird clipping noise, and then ceased to work entirely. The sound guy unbridged it, and it seemed to work acceptably for the rest of the weekend. (I'm kinda in the market for a new amp....)

The set runs long, we take a very short break, and come back for round 2........

About halfway through the second set, the singers microphone just quits. He kind stares at it, turns it on and off, raps it against his hand, and that's pretty much the end of his problem solving ability. The sound guy comes over, starts wiggling cables behind the amp box and POP suddenly the mic starts working again, so we finish the set. The singers mic was a problem all night long, and kept fading in and out to some degree accompanied by a loud popping sound where it would either be back at full volume or gone completely......

Somewhere in the whole melee, I got socked in the face with my microphone because I was essentially playing on the dance floor......

At the end of the night I ran away as fast as I could!

The sound guy re-wired the mic hook ups from the singers wireless, (These things are easier to catch right out of the box if the singer would show up with his stuff more than five minutes before go time).

The guitar amp seemed to work ok on Saturday night.

I could not move at all all weekend long.

The singer was too busy trying to get laid to help with load out, and the drummer disappeared for about 20 minutes as he texted his GF from the parking lot as we carried heavy stuff past him.

The only good thing was that we got paid on Sunday morning!

I am really looking forward to this coming weekend. The club is my favorite place to play, and I'm not setting up the drummers monitor!!!!

Wow. I'd be having a band discussion about that fiasco and how it will never happen again...

It's been discussed, but the singer just doesn't care about pulling his own weight, so we take money out of him. Still pisses me off, because I wouldn't do his work for twice the amount, but it's something.

The drummer is getting worse with this crap as time goes by, and I think it's about time to consider docking him for not helping out.

L.S.D. ??? Lifting Stuff Disorder?

As for the singer not helping w/ load in load out, you should be docking him ALOT. The way I look at is that playing is free, I get paid for the load it/setup/teardow/load out...That means your singer should get $5 at the end of the night for milage. haha

Oh yeah, if the drummer had all sorts of room behind him, I would have set up there.

You made it through all that and still aren't in jail facing homicide charges! I'd consider the gig a huge success!

I feel your pain on the drummer and space issues...Our drummer seems to think he's the only guy that "doesn't" have to make space consessions. He shows up at gigs where he knows the stage is tiny, and proceeds to set up his Terry Bozzio kit...please... NO one else has any room...

Maybe you ought to try texting your wife for 30 mins in the parking lot next time after you load out your personal stuff.

Bring one cable. Yours.

And show up 15 mins before the gig. Set up your rig. Smile.

They use you because you enable them now. Stop enabling.

The thing that would have truly bothered me is the drummer.. The nerve to not setup his crap, than complain it's not where it should be.. I would I have said my bad, I remember now.

And put it back in the trailer..

Than whan the drummer returned I'd be having a drink at the bar..

I've had the same issues over and over during the past two years playing with a keyboard player that uses 3 keyboards for a gig. He was a complete jerk and blamed everyone else for his short comings (whether musical or personal). If he sang out of key, it was a problem with the monitors. If played poorly on song, it was because he had to sing too. His gear buzzed very badly, and he blamed the venue for having bad power....every time. And he showed up late for rehearsal and gigs.

I finally had enough and bowed out of that group a few months ago.

Good luck!

Actually, that's kinda my plan for this weekend. My nephew is getting married on Friday, so I'm taking off from work at noon (Hopefully) and going to the bar to set up. I plan on getting back to the bar last minute after I enjoy myself at the reception.......

The drummer isn't usually that bad, but OMG! I have no problem helping out when it's needed, but Jesus! Show a little appreciation!

When the fellas show get to the bar for set up this Friday, the bass rig and my mic stand are going to be onstage waiting for them. I'd try to spread my stuff out as far as I could, but the thought of them moving it when I'm not there really bothers me.....

Yeah, I used to be the guy who fixed everything, made sure everyone else had what they needed, etc. It's just not worth it. Some bands help out and everyone pitches in, but some bands use you and take advantage. I don't know your full situation with the band, but in my experience, it's never worth it. I second Thor's post. Don't take that crap no more!

I'm so glad I haven't had a gig like that in a very long time! Thanks for making me feel better!!

That suks. We played a festival this wekend and I was sick as hell. We even went acoustic but since 95% of the PA is at my home (practice place) I had to load and unload it myself. I had help setting up but when when we were moving out for the next band PA mains ,stands etc thru people and around the next band setting up our drummer was standing outside drinking coffee watching us. I was too tired and sick to say anything since It would of been ugly but its going to stop.

I feel grateful. I own the PA and trailer and will haul anything that will fit in it, but everyone pitches in during load-in/load-out. All I'm left to do is connect a the speakers and set levels.

Easy solution

you're being a roadie. Charge extra, like an a band member share, or don't do it. Any gear of yours they use, they pay for and guarantee to replace if they damage it.

You are a better man than I am - That is because I am a prick.
No way would I have done 1/4 of the work you do/did to make a gig happen.
If others cannot be pros, I walk. I don't have time to do other peoples work and won't have others do mine.
You mentioned he moved your rig - that would have recieved a good bye from me, because I am a prick!

I think that's spot on. The guitar player owns the lions share of the PA, and I have no problems pitching in to carry everything in and set it up. There was a local music shop that folded a few years back, and I bought a crap load of XLR cables from them for cheap and donated them to the PA. (Least I can do seeing as how they're wear and tear items, and it's not my PA). I also have my personal stash of neon yellow XLR's. They're yellow so I can identify them and keep them separate from the communal stuff. I really does bother me to lend those out. I think I'm going to stick with my original plan of not lending them out.
