I know vintage instruments and amps can be cool, but what equipment just makes you look like an old guy?
I've got a Boss chromatic tuner which has an actual physical needle, not an LCD display. Some people have freaked out when they saw it, including a 30-year-old at last night's gig, because it apparently looks extremely ancient to them. This worries me. I play music largely to keep young women from thinking I'm old and boring, so this is a very important question, almost as important as what to do with my hair. Should I leave this tuner at home and bring a cheap new one to gigs instead?

| | | | Huh. A lot of the early (ie, old vintage) tuners are the stroboscopic type that are so popular in their lcd versions today, so what do kids know?
A stool or a chair makes you look old. I understand impairment--half my back is titanium--but sitting down is for pussies... |

I guess, vintage P-basses are about as old guy as you can get, though lots of young dudes have 'em too.
Vintage Acoustic with folded 18" cab.
Fender Bassman as your actual bass amp.
Banging two rocks together.

What I think makes me look old is my LACK of all the modern, boutique effects pedals that's out these days.
My pedals/effects??I have one of the old Ashley rackmount compressors.(Still sounds great, though!!)
And,also I have probably one of the first T.C. Electronics Chorus Pedals.
Everything that I have is at least 13-14 years old(At least I change my strings every 2 weeks!):Eden WT-800,(2)4X10 XLT cabs.(From around '96-'97)
My "newest" bass is a '97 Carvin LB75KOA.
God,I'm not cool.At all.

Forget about the tuner and quit acting so insecure.
PS: If the girl likes you she'll say, "What's that neat thing with the needle that moves?", or, "What's that neat thing with the blinking lights?", depending on which one you brought. The tuner itself will have nothing to do with it. |

Forget about the tuner and quit acting so insecure. | But then I'll be out of tune and that will make me feel insecure too! How's that supposed to help?
Now, I suppose another person might have put a smiley or two in the original post, but I am far too masculine to use smileys.

In regards to the OP, i think style is more of a tell of age than equipment. But, i do thing age is pretty superfluous. I've seen old dudes rock out, and i've seen young dudes look nerdy and lame as hell.
As long as you get up there and rock out like you WANT to rock, everything else shouldn't matter.
When it does come to gear though, to me it seems like the mid-era stuff is the 'old guy' stuff. Things from the 80s in peticular.

Also... c'mon... old dudes can't lift RD Artists to play anymore anyways.

In a few years I'll be old enough to be in a "White Guy Blues Band"
While the guitar player will have to wear a floppy hat and a Stratocaster I'll need to grow a beard, put on 50 lbs locate a bunch of vintage Hawaiian shirts and corduroy OP shorts and Birkenstock sandals.
Naturally I'll need a 6 string bass slung at chest height and a rack full of blinking gear to simulate an all tube head with out the weight.
