So im in my local music store.
-theres this guy(guitarist) whos probably about 55 or so, talkin to the owner, blah blah blah...
-somehow he starts talking to my friend(guitarist) about marshalls and les pauls and picks and tiny puny strings and all that other lame crap guitarists talk about.
-after a while, he asks, do you guys know any bass players?
-i raise my hand
-he asks me if im willing to do any studio work, i kinda get confused, but say sure. the reason im confused is cuz im 17, i might be able to pass for 19 or 20, but still this dudes like 55-60, not that theres anything wrong with that, but usually guys that age know a lot of people who are probably better than i am, not that im bad.
-he gives me his card and tells me to give him a call.

at this point, i think, wow this is pretty cool, i dont really know whats going on, but ill just go with it

-the guy leaves
-the owner and i start talking...wow that was kinda odd...im like 17, is he blind?...
-then the ownethat the guy has been there forever talling him why his wife left him and why he moved here from New Jersey and all sorts of crap that no one cares about, and that the guy was just really annoying.
-then he tells me that the guy was talking about this album he wants to make...
-its a 50th anniversary present for his parents, all stuff he wrote, and he plays mostly classical(yes i do mean classical), blues, folk, and sometimes a bit of country music.

what the hell is going on here.

what would you guys do in this situation? i mean, its kinda weird that he told the owner all that personal stuff, and his musical preference is kinda odd, but would you guys get in on this for the buck?

i dont know what to do

Assuming he's not a rapist or something, I would do it, if only for the story. Then the money. Then the music he's written. In that order.

I don't see what's so weird. He wants to record some music that calls for bass playing. You're a bass player. If the money is worth your time, play.

I think learning to play different styles of music
will help you play your style, much better.

Thumbs up

This thread would be funnier if you got a phone number from a girl and didn't know what to do.

I agree with whoever told you to call and assess the situation. Same as if it was a girl.

Sounds like it could be a fun new experience for you, and you could get some cash out of it too. Go for it. But if the words "bend over" ever come up, well, you know to get the hell out then.

I'll play on anything I can get paid for, and to be honest the wierder the better. I have played on local pop, punk, metal, folk and yes, rap. The rap session is by far my favorite story - it's where I learned what a glizzock was !

Do it!

i dont know what to do
what have you got to lose by giving it a try ?
i don't think that just because the store owner said this guy was annoying ,
that he's automatically some kind of pervert ...

maybe you'll learn something by playing a different style of music ...

i've been approached in the store to record some tracks for a country blues album ...
it worked out rather well in my case .

i was well paid , got credit on the album ,
and the extra studio experience was helpful also .

You go by the name "I PLAY BASS GUITAR".
This guy asked you to play bass guitar.
Whats the issue?
If you not able to ,then tell him your not that good ,otherwise PLAY BASS GUITAR.

Yep. It sounds to me like he was blabbing to sound more impressive than he is. Like the dudes that walk into GC or Sam Ash blabbing about their big gigs and a dropping big names. Approach. Call him. Be skeptical, but still call and set up. Don't let yourself get wrapped up into his hype.

He's 55 and can' find a bassist?

There is a reason I got a few projects going. They can
never find bassists. Other guitarists are in overabundant
supply. Not bassists.

Take the shot.

If he is smart, he will use a hired recording studio. Or have
other people onsite as you are a minor. If he can't figure that
out, you don't want to be there.

I would avoid a home studio situation, or bring a friend if
it doesn't work out the way you anticipated.

No kiddin'! My last band took several months to replace me and in the end they had to settle for a 15 year old kid who'd only been playing 3 months.

Good luck getting gigs
