My look: short white guy with a moustache wearing slim jeans, nice shoes, and a plain shirt, having the time of his life.

Well I like to put some effort into my style. Been working out for 3 months and really lost some weight, not that I was fat, but I got to a stage where I got a bit soft. Now I like it simple and vintagey. Converse, tight levi's, vintage shirt or a henley, leather jacket. I look like a young James Spader so why not put effort into looking good while I'm still young

Looks? Who cares? Hey you want to really want to make your bass playing stand out and not be in the backline? Play in a power trio.

Good for you man! I think when you are healthier you play better, and when you look better you feel better. There is definitely something to it. Keep it up! P

Thanks for the nice wishes man, I agree. You definitely get more stage confidence. I recommend anyone to try out P90X, Insanity and rope jumping. Doesn't take a lot of daily time but you feel and look much better within even the first month. I got from pants size 33/34 to 31. Drawback - a lot of my pants look too baggy on me now.

+1, you're right! My newest (and most gigging) band is a power trio. Can't hide in the background in this one, nope.

I look awesome and get loads of gigs (and girls) because of it. Heck, I spend more time on my hair than I do practicing my bass. In fact, I can hardly play it.

I also play a cheap used Arbor bass because I spend most of my money on fashionable clothes and hair stylists.

But I look so amazing that every band in town wants to hire me. Or they just want to be me.

I can tell this post is insincere. If you meant all that, you would have said "And I look so amazing..." instead of "But I look so amazing..."

But, but, I did mean it!

Every word of it!

Enough with you ugly people, I have to go to put in some more hair gel for my afternoon photo shoot.

True story. Friday, first gig with new bass. It's an eye-catching one as far as basses go - mirror pickguard, plus it's a right-handed bass with a left-handed body shape which I'm playing left-handed, so it's upside down and right side up at the same time.

I get two comments about the bass. One guy asked why I'm not playing double bass, and a girl said she's disappointed I didn't bring my doubleneck BG.

On the other hand, several more people said something about my T-shirt, and it was always positive. And this shirt is very subtle by my standards.

So, not only are looks more important than playing, your shirt (or shirtlessness as the case may be) is a more important component of your looks than your bass. Now don't you feel silly for having basses which cost more than shirts?

Actually in a lot of bands it seems like it's a three pronged thing.

1) Looks

2) Singing

3) Bass playing

In that order.

The average (or worse) looking guy who can't sing but can play the hell out of the bass would probably be better off pursuing studio work. Or maybe jazz.
