Well with all that hubbub about Miley Cyrus strutting her stuff (You GO girl!) more and more people I spoke with are convinced that it was all a hoax. The orginasation of the whole thing OBVIOUSLY knew in advance that that was going to happen.
I haven't put any effort into watching the MTV video Music awards, since the current state of "Music" is leaving me depressed. Dave Grohl once said that the Foo Fighters were on a number of VMA's not because people loved their music but because they just needed a rock band there to off balance all the Hip-hop and teenie bopper stuff.
And if Miley Cirus strutting her stuff (and let's face it she's HOT) is getting everybody's panties in a knot is the most memorable moment of the VMA's this year, the VMA certainly has lost its soul.
Because the best moments of controversy on the VMA's were NOT planned out in advance.
Rage Against the machine were told in advance that they were not going to win the best rock award because Limp Bizkit was going to win it, so they were told by the staff to just act surprised. But bass player Tim Commerford was getting more and more angry with how fake it all was, so he went "You want an act, I'll GIVE you an act!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UaGVNx0vG0
When Nirvana played the 1992 VMA, They had one home run after another: first they wanted to play "Rape me" but were forbidden to do so but Kurt still started the performance with the first lines of that song, Then bass player Krist Novoselic's amps started to malfunction and since the song was already at its end he decided "okay screw it" and threw his bass up in the air and it popped him right in the cranium. And it ended with drummer Dave Grohl (Familiar name?) calling out to Axl Rose since they had a backstage squabble with him prior. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQPUG1LOwok
In 1994, REM got an award for best Video director. Now keep in mind what I just mentioned, the artists are told in advance who is going to win the award and much like Tim Commerford a few years later. Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys, barged the stage to make a statement about how Spike Jonz who directed the Beasties' Video for "Sabotage" was more deserving of the award. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Baid74lkk-8
Then there was a time when the high bosses of MTV thought it would be good to have what in their minds were two similar bands play back to back. The Hives and the Vines. But Hives frontman Howling Pelle Almqvist wasn't really all that happy that they were put in the slot first and as their song came to an end said something of the Vines never being able to better what they just did. Which resulted in the Vines trying a little too hard and screwing up their performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER5UOrfdwsY
When Metallica played the European edition of the VMA back in 1996 they were planned to play "King nothing" but instead decided to perform two Misfits songs called "Last caress" and "So what?" which is one F-bomb after another. As a result, every single time this VMA is repeated, the Metallica performance is cut from it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGtxaSwirto
