Where did Glam Rock Go?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been pondering.

There's been a lot of trending in my area for bands, eg, Jet and Wolfmother became popular so we had a flood of Garage rock bands, Emo's in now, so there's lots of Emo bands etc. But with Emo, Metal and Punk there's the 'look' of an Emo, Metal or Punk band.

A lot of this look is just long, unwashed hair, and torn jeans. But I was curious, does anyone here get properly dressed up for gigs?

Kiss style? (Doesn't count if you're a Kiss tribute band.)
If you're in a punk band, do you Style your hair in weird and wacky ways before you hit the stage? How about your clothing? (Is there safety pins?)

I would love to see local bands getting decorated, but I doubt it's going to happen here. Do any of you do it?

Do you perhaps even come up with characters for your band? Ridiculously convoluted stories that explain why your drummer is chained to his stool, and your guitarist is wearing pink spandex.

Glam tried to defile the Metal, but it failed and was stricken down to the ground.

Glam was just Hair Metal a few years before people were ready to embrace Hair Metal. The trend of the last 20 years to not dress up nicely was a natural reaction to overdosing on Hair. And I think it's just been hard to go back to something after getting so sick on it.

I think dudes were starting to feel guilty about some of the"feelings" they were having toward their favorite bands.

Where abouts in Australia are you from? We're about to do a run of shows in Melbourne again next month, dress glam but have evolved to a more Black Crowes influenced sound over the last few years.

Are you referring to hair metal or glam rock? Glam rock was what happened in the late 60s/ early 70s (T Rex, David Bowie, Roxy Music, etc). Hair Metal was what happened in the 80s (Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, etc). Either way they were styles of music and culture that have seen their day come and go, but there are bands that keep both alive if you look for them.

Poison, 'Theatre of Pain' era Motley Crue, Pretty Boy Floyd and other hair metal atrocities tainted the proud legacy of '70s glam rock pioneers like Bowie, T Rex, Mott the Hoople, New York Dolls, Sweet and early-era Japan.

I agree that Black Veil Brides are kinda emo-glam. Even My Chemical Romance show flashes of glam. Their new day-glow incarnation certainly involves large doses of deliberate showiness.

Things like this run in cycles. Maybe people will forget what the '80s did to glam and give it another chance. One more reason to hate hair metal.

Blame your countrymen......ACDC. They are such a simple kick ass rock band (one of my favs) and look like 5 guys who would be shooting pool and drinking beer at the local pub. They showed you don't have to have a schtick to make it in rock and roll as long as your music has something that people like. Yes Angus had the schoolboy outfit I guess, but really they are about the raw, simple, powerful riff driven rock.

The hair metal bands the OP is thinking of (I assume) are post-AC/DC, not pre-. AC/DC's heyday was 1975-1983, with some revivals since then. The main batch of hair metal - Whitesnake, Motley Crue, etc. - came along mid-80s (not counting Kiss).
