Is there any reason besides "looking cool" to hang your bass down by your knees while you play? And why does it look cool? Is it the because of the guy from Guns & Roses or something?
It actually does feel cool... but then i start playing and it gets uncool really fast.
Just wondering your guy's thoughts on the subject.

You ever see the guy from Fishbone? He hangs that sucker low, and kicks my butt all over the place. I don't think where you hang it is as important as whether or not you can play it. |

But how do these ppl play so well with it hangin so low? Do they have super large hands and long arms? Or did they just get used to it cuz it looked cool? (gawd i haven't checked out fishbone in a long time)

I used to do it like that because I imagined myself some metal god or something, and you just can't pound the hell outta a bass unless it's slung low, IMHO. Course now I play more jazz, blues, and funk, so that's not so important anymore.

Basically it looks cool but not as comfortable....the only guy that can look badass with bass slung high is ryan martinie imo...and maybe sheehan? loL meh |

It's so much easier to use the full length of the neck then, plus, how are you meant to tap if you have the bass slung around your ankles? No more Stuart Hamm licks then! |

Super low is fun, but I loose a lot of accuracy.
I am kind of in the middle. I like for my right hand to be somewhat relaxed (wrist not bent at a right angle) but also to be able to reach all the range of my bass with the left.

| | | | I think its a matter of technique,
I find, playing with a pic is more comfortable slung low, Slap and pop techniques and tapping work better slung high. So I split the difference and sling it right at my waist.... and play mostly index and middle finger. Its murder when you use the Tony Levin Funk Fingers, Im still working that one out

Low and Metal looks verra kewl, but I can't play strongly on my G like that, and I lose accuracy.
High and tight gives me horrible cramps in my wrists. Playing like that is an exercise in carpel tunnel cultivation. And pain. Pain, pain, pain.
So...In The Middle. Basically, to where, if my bass wasn't there, my thumb would rest at the top of the right side of my pelvic bone.

I used to wear it low, but it was just uncomfortable. I've been of the "sitting position same as standing position" camp for years now, so I guess it'd be classified as high.
Just do what works for you.
(FTR, Tim Commerford wears his up high. He be cool. )
