How about some off the wall ones? Started out playing with an evangelical church group,...we would perform and act as back up for whoever was featured at the revival,...Such big names as,..."Ed, from green acres"...he really couldn't sing......Paul Harvey,...another really can't sing guy,......Then went on to rock and roll fame and fortune,.....okay,..maybe not fame,..or fortune,...but did manage the R & R part,....played with Chuck Berry,...Gatemouth Brown,...love that black cowboy suit,... did tons of opening act gigs,...from Humble Pie , Dave Mason, the Blasters, Canned Heat, Debbie Boone, she lit up my life, Steppenwolf, Marshall Tucker band, Eddie Money, Joan Jett, Duran Duran,....even opened for and backed up Minnie Pearl once,....and who said I would never be famous!!!!:hyper :

Well as I'm in AUSTRALIA, a cuppla LOCAL legends..... Back in about 1985 5 yrs after he was one in of THE most famous groups in AUSTRALIA in the 70's -SKYHOOKS, had a jam with Bongo Starkey, A guitard & an OK one too. He seemed a pretty down to earth guy & said he 'dug our grooves MAN!" ;-)

Also 'bout the same time, at a party, .. with Paul Kelly who's -IMHO not a bad songwriter, but again iMO isn't all he's cracked up to be. Back then we were jamming- or I was desperately trying to follow what he was doing- as EVERYONE At the party thought he was The King of EVERYTHING.......:-/ Then after that wen OK I suggested we do a Hank Williams tune(that was the 'style of the day' ) & suggested "move it on over"...... He said he didn't know it & wouldn't even TRY it!! even after I showed him how simple it was tro do as a 'jam' thang!!!! :-/ hmmmmmm Australia's Bob Dylan.... Possibly ;-) Ha ha! Flame suit -engage!!!!

Played a plaid guitar, as I recall... had tiny, thin hands (we shook - I thought I hurt him!)
Blues was one of my best friends about 10 years ago. He actually endorsed Samick. They made the Blues Saraceno model guitar.
He did the Poison gig for a paycheck. He happens to be one of the best guitar players I've ever seen. Try to find some stuff from his old band, Transmission OK. He is one of the most in demand session guys in LA now.

Not like I would ever brag about this but since you asked;

While I was still in high school, my band opened for Tesla (when they were still called city kidd). Nice guys, one of them gave me a mixed drink and then made me chug it.

I Played with Earl Slick (David bowie, Phantom Rocker and Slick).

One of my bands opened up for The Earl Slick Band. Don't forget that he also did guitar for John Lennon.

Richie Blackmore

I was playing in a bar band. Richie Blackmore sat in.
He first played my bass--- I jumped on one of our keyboard set ups. Then he played guitar so I could play a tune on bass with him.

No we didn't play Smoke on the Water. LOL

I played with Emmy Lou Harris once. She was in the front of the store trying out a guitar and I was in back playing bass.

I'm pretty sure she didn't know I was there though.

Sorry to hear about Dave. I played with a gig with him &
Skip Mesquite ( Tower of Power) at the Whisky Gulch many
years ago. He was not doing well that night - sick with

Not what I envisioned when I played bass behind him.

Jim Pugh

Bobby Shew

Pugh was pretty aloof, but great chops.

Shew was also a hot player, but he was really fun to play with. One bit of advice he gave that has stuck with me to this day was, "When you take a solo, stay off the root." It's always worked.

We were the band at a KISS expo in Kansas City last year and former KISS lead guitarist Bruce Kulick sat in with us for Lick it Up and Rock n Roll All Nite. TALL dude. He's as tall as me (and I'm 6'1" AND wearing platform boots) in this video.

Wow. As a bass player, that must have been intense.

I backed up Randy Travis on a song at my church a few years ago. Played worship sets with Zoro (Lenny Kravitz' drummer) and with Luis Conte.

OK, heres my compilation. I'nm gonna stick to the people who actually have a name and history.
Johnny Hartman
Fred Lipsius ( BSnT)*
Joe Lovano
Lee Finkelstein (TOP, Blues Brothers, Funk Filharmonik)
Pig Vomit (Howard Sterns band)
Shakti ( replaced Percy Jones in this one)
Shawn Klush (Winner of the Elvis impersonater at Graceland in 2008)

I'm sure I've forgotten a name or two ( like I tell people, "I've forgotten more gigs than you've done")But this will do for now. Played with lots of peolpe who play or played with stars, but that doesn't count for this one

*played with dozens of musicians who have toured with BSnT, the stories I could tell

Lady Bo from 1968 - current, Bo Diddley 1970 - 1992. Also played with Chuch Berry in Hawaii at the HIC Arena, I believe 1971. Lady Bo and I had a band that included Napolean Murphy Brock and Corney Bumpus. Over the years our band also used Russ Ferrante (Yellow Jackets) and Danny Hull (Doobie Brothers).

I'm not really the kind to kiss and tell, but I just had to post an amusing story.

I've just started playing for a solo artist doing rock/pop and we had our first gig on the weekend. The drummer is a great guy, is very good, and is endorsed by about 4 drum companies, so I knew he must have had some commercial exposure, but I didn't know him. We hit it off really well, and got tight very quickly - he makes me sound good, so he's alright in my books!!!

Came off stage and a couple of my mates who are metal heads were going nuts because it turns out he has been in several fairly major metal bands (Soilwork, Chimaira, Southpaw, Demonoid, Therion), toured supporting Dio and John Foggerty, and just last year was drummer for Stu Hamm in his bass clinics out this way.

Nice guy. Very loud

Back in college, the director was Ricky Ford (who played with Mingus). Over the years guest artists included Alan Dawson, Steve Lacy, and Mal Waldron. It was great. Some of the members of the Heavy Metal Horns (now the Boston Horns) played with us. A few of them have played on one of my CDs about 10 years back. I played with that band for four years in college and three post. It was quite fun, and quite an education. By the end I knew some arrangements so well Ricky would sometimes lean on me as to how we needed to play them.

I've met many famous musicians, but the jazz realm is the only place I've had a chance to play with them.
