i never tried guitar before i started playing bass. but then again, my basses now are bigger, have more strings, and are substantially harder to play than a guitar (from a purely physical exertion point of view) so i really wouldn't put much stock in these comments. shoot, my classical guitar feels like a toy to me (not that i play it well or anything) .

I started because EVERYONE was playing guitar in the 70's and my teacher told me that if I wanted to work, I should play bass. He was right, and I ended up a much better bassist than guitarist. I could never go back.

In high school, I used to whack on guitar and keyboard. In my first year of college, I went to Lafayette Radio Electronics to buy a cheap six-string electric. Like many things at Lafayette, it wasn't in stock. ("Out of stock, out of mind.")

I bought a $40 Teisco copy of a Mosrite bass. Even though I've occasionally whacked the other instruments, I've been playing bass since that day in 1970.

I don't know why I've still got the original receipt for that long-gone bass, but I guess it's just sentimentality. That and room in the file cabinet.

I had bass player ask me that when I started out. He then proceeded to pick up his bass and share some double thumping with me and another bass player he was teaching. I then asked him if he picked up bass because he couldn't hack the drums. The guitar players at the place laughed their ass off. I go to that shop all the time I don't think I've ever seen him play anything besides double thumping.

Ya, comments like that kind of piss me off though. I play bass because I like bass. I don't care if guitar is harder or whatever. I like the fact that I can play almost every cover song I want to learn quite easily without much work.

i've never got that, though thats probably because i play guitar as well, but if someone did ask me that they would get a funny look and then asked why they didn't play an instrument/play the instrument they choose is it "cos you couldn't hack bass"

Gotta be a MAN to play bass!
And I've seen girls on bass that are more of a "man" than most guitards...

I was 15 years old and heard "Substitute" on The Who's Live at Leeds for the first time. I didn't want to play any other instrument after that.
