Had a gig last nite at a local club, have played there a few times with other bands.
We played after a solo dinner music duo,so no sound check. Our first song was fairly loud so I told both guitards to please turn down, especially turn down the bass knob!
The second song was so loud it actually hurt my ears. I could tell by the reaction of the crowd( they couldn't talk to each other) just how loud it was.
I told the rhythm guitard who was set up just a few feet away that either he turns down or I'm just gonna stand there. That worked for him. Next song- lead guitard through a marshall half stack, so loud that I could not hear myself, just felt it,& could barely hear the rhythm,
guitard right next to me.
After that song I told lead guitard the same thing & he did turn down maybe 1/8 turn on the knob.
Turns out he had his friends from the local guitar shop at the gig & was trying really hard to impress them!
The entire gig sounded horrible & I was actually embarrassed !
After the gig, when lead guitard heard from others how loud he was he said "sorry, was I?" |

Play too loud
Disregard the band's sound as a whole, only caring how they sound
Boosting their lows
Eqing their guitar solo, not in the mix
Not knowing how to freaking eq a guitar!!!
Not knowing how to use/setup their equipment
Acting like a jerk

If you guys can record your shows live, it will help you to prove your point. It's always a battle getting them to turn down until they can actually hear it from the audience's perspective. I'm one of the lucky few that doesn't have that problem, but I've been in bands before with similar issues.

| | | | Get rid of him. Being in a band is about the band, not about how much fretboard wanking you can do in front of your friends. Luckily for you, lead guitarists grow on trees behind Guitar Center. So just go pick out another one.

Do some practicing in big rooms and have someone stand out in front and record it. Then you can point out to the guitar player how ****** it sounded.

I recommend the Let It Rock album by the Jerry Garcia Band. So that he can hear a guitar player playing sick leads softly and what an impression that can make on the listener. That and constant chastising will usually work for a while.
