I'll take 95/98 just for the fact that if you have to reload Windows for any reason, your whole hard drive doesn't get wiped out like with XP. Haven't tried Vista yet and I don't plan on it.

I put it on a Core Duo machine with 4GB of RAM and I had issues running Adobe CS3 Web Premium. Fireworks was pretty much useless, the curser would hesitate and skip. Since I use Dreamweaver and fireworks all day long, I couldn't deal with the terrible performance. Office 2003 ran great on the Vista Platform, go figure. |

Vista really isn't as bad as everyone claims it is. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have gotten XP on my laptop if I could.
YMMV, of course. | Yeah W2k Pro wasn't bad either, I had that from 2002 n'til the day I found my salvation in Mac OSX a cpl a years later.

You must know a trick I don't, and I've been in IT for 20 years. All new Win95/98 (and up) fresh installs (NOT upgrades) will wipe out all contents of your hard drive. Speaking of upgrades, I don't recommend doing that either.
Compared to WinME at the time, Win98 was the best. WinXP is by far my favorite -- I use it at home & work. Vista will never touch our home PC. |

i vote XP, which is far from perfect | I'll also go for Windows XP. I also remember that Windows 2000 was pretty stable OS platform for myself and the clients I had at that time at Nortel. Windows ME? That was so bad that I never met anyone that even attempted to use it.. it came, it went, now it's pretty much forgotten.. |

As for now, I've avoided Vista and will stay with XP Pro 64-bit Edition until something better is released. Windows 7 (Vienna) is supposed to be out at the end of next year, but as usual MS is surely exaggerating the release date.

XP seems just as stable (in use at work, have OS X at home), but uses twice the resources to accomplish the same thing. |

| | | | Windows 98SE (the run in 2000 -- make sure the CD is dated 2000) is THE best IMO. Win95 was ok, never got exposed to ME (thankfully). Ended up with XP last year. Its not bad and I will take it or 98SE though XP has its probs.
I recently got a new laptop with VISTA. O.M.G. After 8 hours of trying to get my ISP to work on it I took it back to the rent a center and grabbed one of the 2 systems left with XP that they had. I loved the laptop that VISTA was on but no way was I going to pay $200 for the program to backdate it to XP...why should /we/ have to PAY for their mistake? Microsoft is so crooked...

I was a Mac & *nix guy exclusively until Win2K. I worked IT and supported NT3 & 4, win3.1/95/98se/Me. All y'all can keep those POS's, I'd rather watch TV & read a book before reverting back to ANY of them.
I like XP pro these days, it's a great 'turn it on and get work done' OS. If I could afford to keep up to date with Apple hardware, I'd most likely be back to a Mac.
Linux is coming along... but it is FAR from being used as a GUI bases workstation for me and my life (I admin Linux and Solaris boxes, running command line only, they are the ONLY server solution IMHO... MS should stick to workstations!!!!) |

Best part was the chorus: "You make a grown man cry". |

| | | | The first time I reformatted my HD with XP I did lose everything. I realized what I did wrong and have done it a few times since and not lost anything. XP is a bit different then 98SE but as I said, I will take either one.
VISTA is the most user UNfriendly OS Ive ever had the misfortune to have to try and use.. *shudder*
