Unhappy Worst sound EVER!

I don't know if this has ever been discussed but the worst sound a bassist could ever hear is the sound of his/her bass hitting the ground. My worst one, I was jamming in my basement when all of a sudden my cheap assed strap let go of my bass and my bass hit the cement ground. OUCH! It didn't seem to damage the bass, but man... I was amplified too. So it was that sickening thud followed by the sound of all the strings ringing out open DUUUUNNNNNNN. Not cool at all. Anyone else have similar stories?

i agree... itīs a HORRIBLE sound AND Feeling!

it happened to me twice... and one of those times it wasnīt MY bass (which is pretty awful too!)... to my luck, the owner didnīt noticed the fall of his bass and besides the bass didnīt suffered damage...

My mom was in my room...she turned around to walk out, having just told me something, and Waaannngguuuuunnnnn my bass went over. Fortunatly on to a rug thats on top of carpet, so there's no damage to the bass...

its happened to me a few times actually. I was doing one of those "Jump" styles with the bass, and the strapnut had loosened and ripped out my bass. Not a pretty site.

Merls

I don't jump anymore lol

You don't even know how often this happens to me... I'm buying a set of straplocks my next paycheck, believe you me.

The last gig I played, it was a near fatal catastrophe. We'd just finished soundcheck, and the guitarist was changing a battery in his wah, or something, and I was wandering around in a circle, as I tend to do when I'm onstage with nothing to do. All of a sudden, the bass goes down like a submarine. (If it had hit the floor, I dunno... I have this image of the headstock sticking away from the neck about 90 degrees in wrong direction.) My ninja-quick reflexes saved the day, however, as I instinctively stuck my foot out, bounced the neck off of my shoe, caught the bass, and slapped it into the stand, all in the same motion. As soon as it was safe, the shock kinda caught up with me, and I had to walk backstage for a minute to collect myself.

Came back on, had a great show. Whew....

How about the sound you hear when you've just blown your speaker.... on stage!
It happened to me about 3 years ago with a Peavy cab.

I have.. i was walking in my room and my bass was still plugged into my amp... The cord was right in the middle of the floor... not a good thing! I tripped over the cord and watched helplessly as my bass fell. Luckily, i have thick carpeting. But it was the worst thing I've ever heard, the bass hitting the floor face down. Luckily nothing was damaged.

I need to take a picture of the bottom of my Peavey T-40. I've dropped it 3 times while playing, watched it fall 3-4 times while it was laying against my amp. Hell, One time I fell while I was playing it! And no substances involved! I was standing, then I wasn't. I know the guy that had it before me, and he's let it go once or twice before. It's been kicked over by drunks at a party, and had to live in a room that was about 40 degrees during winter. The result of all the abuse? One small area near the jack is scraped, and the headstock has a pea-sized bit of finished roughed up. Guess peavey knew that eventually someone like me would be a customer one day. That's why the SOB is 15+ pounds and has VERY large hardware. Built to survive the ham-fisted.

Now I have many many guitar/bass stands, straplocks on everything, and I'm much more coordinated now I always take it to gigs, it's a great "Just in case I...." bass.

One of the salesmen I deal with at Guitar Center plays bass in a local band here in St. Louis. He said he was playing a show here in town a few months ago, and it was goiong really good, so he got all full of energy. So he took his beautiful MM Sterling by the neck and swung it around in circles. He was playing on a concrete stage and the bass was skipping in circles, chips of paint flying and sparks flying off the bridge.

Another time I was at an MxPx show and the singer/bassist was switching basses between songs and he took his StingRay and through it up in the air, about 20 feet and just let it land on the stage while he grabbed his other bass.

Even when it's someone else's instrument, it still pains me.

one time, i was playing, wasnt jumpin around or anything, and the singer who was being a complete ________ ( fill in with the word of your choice, just make sure its bad like &%$#@*^! or ******* ) grabbed the neck of my bass and gave it a yank. the strap nut flew out with the strap, the bass hit the floor. luckily it was my crap yamaha. he was severly beaten none the less.

the thing i hate most about band class in school is when like the trombone players or trumpet players stroll by with a stand and their case. BAM!! the stand hits your bass, "Oh, ........ sorry" ....... yeah you better be sorry you little horn playin sack a crap.... that and when people who know nothing about the bass, come up to you "uh can i play your bass?" ....... NO!!!!! go away!!!

oh ive worked myself up.....

thus the reason i ivest in strap locks......

My brother pulled a butcher knife on me once. But me being always calm, I just picked up a long chair, and pushed it into his hand, twisted, and watched the knife go into the air.

Anyway, the worse sound ever, happened to me about 3 weeks ago. I was looking for my stand in my room, then I realized I left in my brother's room(he was out of the country at this time). So I just propped my bass up against my dresser and went to his room. Upon getting to his room, I started to hear this sliding noise(imagine it in really slow motion). I rushed back to my room in time to see my bass slid off my dresser, see the headstock hit my desk(I have a small room), and then watch my entire bass hit the floor, tuning knobs first.

on two _dead kennedys_ videos that i have (one the "dmpo's on broadway" tape, one a bootleg), klaus floride delibrately disconnects his strap and drops his blue fender jazz bass on the floor of the stage -- the damn strings will ring until the band comes out for an encore, and when they finish, he delibrately drops it again!

i don't think i've seen floride play any other bass at all in all the videos and pictures i've seen of dead kennedys.

in my first pro band (1985-1987), i played a 1979 fender p-bass which i still have. during the end of the last set at a private sportsman's club we played every month, one of the screws in the bridge holding the string saddle came loose and fell out, along with the spring. fortunately, it was the g string and the saddle was still there, but i couldn't play any notes on the string for the rest of the song.

when i looked at my bridge, i found that the screw on the d string was also starting to leave.

that monday, i walked down to a hardware store with one of the screws, did a little matching, and got four new screws and four new springs. i replaced the two lost/departing ones and haven't had to do anything to the bridge since.

I like to tinker with things. One time I plugged what I thought was the direct line out of my bass head into the line in on the guitar combo amp I gave my wife since she wants to learn guitar. The combo has a cool tremolo thing on it I wanted to play my bass through but I wanted the EQ's of my head, so I had this all wired up as I had done many times before.
I hit the string once.
I plugged the SPEAKER out into the line in on the guitar amp. Can you say overdrive?
That amp is dead now.
