How is he playing a bass guitar? So I guess a 6-string electric can also be called a BASS guitar just because there happen to be 6 string bass guitars?
True there shouldn't be restrictions on what can be called such and such instrument music, but you have to draw the line somewhere. He's playing a guitar with guitar spacing, guitar sized strings, with a pick, playing shredding riffs with full on distortion and guitar tone. There is nothing even close that would clue someone in that it's a bass guitar other than the amount of strings, which wouldn't matter if you couldn't actually see him playing. Even in some music played on a bass that is more melodic and chordial based, even if the tone and sound is similar to say things that might be played on a classical guitar, the frequency and sound is such that it still tells you that it's a BASS guitar.

Pretending otherwise doesn't make much sense, since he's been doing the job for over 25 years in one of the biggest heavy metal acts in the world.
Playing a solo with a guitar-like tone is forbidden I guess if you want respect from the conservative crowd.
Good news, he doesn't mind. |

Whatever he is playing looks to me like a bass with a guitar bridge/trem, a narrow spaced nut, and guitar strings. Whether or not that = a bass guitar is up to you (not you specifically). |
