so we had a gig last weekend, and were contacted by a younger band that was playing the show and were coming from around two hours away. They asked, since they only wanted to take one car, if they could use our cabs to save space.
Normally, I don't let ANYONE use my gear, but since I know how much it sucks to take two cars to a gig a long way away (been there, done that) and because they asked ahead of time, we told them no problem.
So, to the gig. They were the first band and we were there early so i helped them set everything up (their bassist was not quite versed in the ways of amps, was completely amazing at my pre/power setup) I set it up to an acceptable volume and told him to not turn it up at all.
So they start playing, bass is very loud so I sneak up and turn him down a bit (this was a teen center type gig, i didn't run out on stage or anything) and the levels sound good.
halfway through his set, he walks over and cranks my volume WAY past what i told him was the limit. my clip light on my pre AND my power turns and stays on so I run up and turn him back down and give him a look.
It gets better. After they finish their set, they grab their gear and leave, not even bothering to watch our set, the band that was kind enough to let them use our gear!
Never, EVER again will I let teenagers use my stuff!

Teens are just about as idiotic as other people can be and it really sounded like this guy didn't know what he was doing. There are plenty of competent teens out there. But yes, he should obey YOUR rules when playing YOUR stuff.

That'd be like isolating an entire ethnic group of people because of one jerk, truth is theres idiots everywhere. I know that in my teenage days I was appreciative of peoples gear and would have respected your wishes and would have stuck around to watch you play!
+1 on not letting others use your gear, I let a friend borrow a practice combo amp and he trashed it in a little less than a month.

I'm not at all convinced that we become more decent as we age, but with experience and perspective most people do manage to avoid at least some of the jerk moves that they (unwittingly) pulled when they were younger. |

I might add that he turned himself up in response to me turning him down. it took me a second to stop myself from just turning my rig off and telling him to screw himself.
and no, he didn't thank us. the guitarist was also around 16 but he was quite courteous.
I redact my statement. I'll never let NOOBS use my gear! they can be any age!

| | | | I'm usually pretty generous about sharing my rig, especially my cab, including with teenagers, but I absolutely never let anyone I don't know use my gear. Once I've played with a band once or twice and talked to their bass player a little bit, and I'm sure that he knows how my rig works and isn't an inconsiderate jerk, I'll let him use my cab, or my entire rig if he needs to. That policy has definitely saved me some headaches. And I've found that guys who get offended when you don't let them use your gear five minutes after you met them are the ones you don't want anywhere near your rig anyway. |

Finished our set, found out that in my eccentric jumping around, I had broken my input jack and my bass's innards were spewing out. As i'm trying to register this a kid comes up to me and says "can I use your bass? it sounds sick!"
on a lighter note, we're playing a two show weekend in New Hampshire, and I'm using borrowed cabs for both of them!(no van for us!) I will be very sure to NOT do what that dude did to me!
previous to this incident, I only let one other person use my rig, and thats because he was running the exact same amp as me, and his amp died. just plopped mine right on top, switched some cables, away he went, and I made a new friend!

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Belgium (Antwerp) | | The same happend to me once when we were doing a show ... the bass playesse (it was a girl) of the first band only had her bass with her and asked if she could play on my amp, a Hartke 3500. I gave her some instructons on the settings and the use of the master and gains ('don't put it past 7'-type stuff) BUT she cranked both the preamp gains to ten AND the master to ten ... needless to say that my head was fried afterwards
Luckily for me that Hartke was my backup and I still could play but the band after us used the Hartke again and it died several times on them.
Off course I had to pay for the repare myself and never had a 'thank you' from her.
I will never let anyone else play on my amp again unless I am sure that they know what they are doing!

"See these knobs?"
"yeah"
"don't touch these knobs, if you need more volume, I'll touch these knobs"
"ok"
seems perfectly reasonable!

| | I'll take you into the water. | | Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Brisbane QLD Australia | | | I usually let people use my rig, but not always. Like I did this gig, where I was one of the organisers and well aqauinted myself to the bass players as my rig was the house rig for the night. told them they can change the eq but not the volume. I recently did a school gig, and even though i knew the bass players, my rig stayed backstage untill I came on (we were the headliners so I didnt have to rush taking it off).
I did another gig with a touring band. about a week before the gig the bass player emailed me asking if he could use my rig, becuase his was being repaired, so I let him use it. I had also been talking to the guitarist from that band (through myspace) about me putting my sansamp on order. And on the night, he had just bought one also and let me use it. So some good things come from being kind. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
